@SciTriat and I just chatted about training above or below threshold to improve V̇O₂max and performance, interpreting group-level research to individual-level application, and how much day-to-day variability to expect in common training metrics

Imagine there was one factor that could increase the probability of you achieving your performance goal 700%!
The good news is, you don't have to imagine.
A 5-year longitudinal study in Australian track and field found:
Completing more than 80% of intended training time,
Makes you 7X more likely to achieve your performance goals that training year.
This often overlooked determinant is simple, but not easy to execute.
How can we improve consistency?
• Fluid and progressive planning to an individuals detraining and building residuals
• Minimize risk in the prescription. Why are unplanned spikes in load appearing?
• Progressing injury rehabilitation from day 1 within the constraints of the injury as quick as an athlete is adapting.
Because every day of standstill is more time added on in the final phases to get the athlete fit enough to meet the demands of the sport.

Dear FEMALE ENDURANCE COACHES. We are getting a good response to our study of coaches’ insights and predictions on endurance training. But, so far, 95% of the respondants are MEN. Please HELP! docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F…

I was recently interviewed by @SciTriat to talk about endurance training, balancing work/sport, the biopsychosocial aspects of sport, female athletes, women in sport, and more. We talked so much it spilled over into two episodes! Listen here... podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcas…

A talent ID strategy that works...
Keep as many athletes in the sport, as long as possible.
If you increase the number of athletes participating, you likely increase the number at the top end of the bell curve 👇

MDC was:
🔵NIRS 12-18 %SmO₂
🔴HR 8-12 bpm
🟣V̇O₂ 300-500 mL/min
So if HR is ⬇️ by >12 bpm at the same power
Or if V̇O₂peak is ⬆️ by >500 mL/min
We can have high confidence that those changes reflect a true ⬆️in fitness
This helps give context for uncertainty in NIRS 8/

Andrew provides some super insights into swim coaching in this episode!
Great talk with @SciTriat about skill development in swimming.
Check it out if you want to learn about alternative perspectives on developing technique in the water.

New preprint! 📢‼️
One of the most influential claims in sport science: External focus of attention is better than an internal focus for motor performance.
Seven previous meta-analyses reported support for this claim.
We found the opposite…
