Mattingly won nine Gold Gloves between 1985 and 1994, missing out just one year in that whole run, and his glove is the reason opposing teams stopped testing him at first. Scouts always said his hands were as reliable as his bat, which is saying something for a .307 career hitter. Digging throws out of the dirt night after night is why teammates trusted him blind over there.
