Christina Cacioppo on what makes them worth 10x: "High agency, get shit done. That sounds so milquetoast, and like that's worth millions of dollars? But yes, actually it is. A high-context person who understands the company and the customers and the domain, making generally reasonable decisions and sometimes bad ones, and then iterating on their bad ones and just moving is so valuable."
Christina on why Vanta pays its top people 10x what it did five years ago "Should I adjust the pitch and be like 'Inevitably the baseline here is Vanta's 50 billion. The real question you should be considering is if you join, can you take us on a journey to 250 billion?’ Should I start saying that? Probably not. But the answer is not definitely not. Because that is the pitch that people who work at Vanta are getting from other companies. The market now is saying that so much, you do seem unambitious. Total comp, it's probably like a factor of 10. I think it actually should be higher. My general comp philosophy is you never pay the top people enough. Patrick: What those top people are doing that's so valuable typically. High agency, get shit done. That sounds so milquetoast and that's worth millions of dollars, but yes, actually it is. A high-context person who understands the company and the customers and the domain, making generally reasonable decisions and sometimes bad ones, and then iterating on their bad ones and just moving is so valuable."

My second conversation with Christina Cacioppo (@christinacaci), Vanta's cofounder and CEO. Charlie Songhurst says the best returns come from companies that are highly boring and highly complex, because fewer founders want to build them. Vanta is one of those companies. When we first talked five years ago, Christina told me about building the first version of Vanta in Excel. Since then she has turned it into the category leader in security compliance. Now she is rebuilding it around AI. We discuss: - Why great software businesses got cheap - Why Vanta eats the cost of AI instead of marking it up - Why comp for top people is up 10X in five years - What is over/under hyped in AI - How AI attackers are changing security - Vanta marketing + billboards - Building trust in an era of low trust Enjoy! Out of office. Into the alley. 🌶️ Last week, we joined forces with @getupcover at Sydney's Spice Alley for Startup Street Social, hanging out with 100+ founders, startup teams, and VCs over street food, drinks, and a well deserved break from the grind. 10/10, would leave the house again for this.💜

With thousands of events during SF Tech Week, it's hard to cut through the noise, but @TrustVanta's custom-branded purple cans stood out to ensure compliance is never a problem! Excited to work with the incredible teams at Vanta, @QuanMG, and @BeTheMachineNYC to share Free Bean coffee with SF

📢 GRC LEADERS 📢 Your scope is expanding. You know it. We know it. VantaCon is the one industry event where AI governance is the main event, not a side track. There's lots to learn, and you should be there. bit.ly/4oF0MlT

Agentic Trust Controls started as an open-source project to help teams manage AI agent risk. The community helped shape it, and now, we’re bringing it into Vanta. With mapped tests and documents, teams can put ATC into practice and demonstrate what’s working, on its own or alongside frameworks like ISO 27001 and ISO 42001. Thank you to everyone who contributed. Here's to the next chapter of ATC! 🥳 Learn more: trustcontrols.ai/

Founders see a problem and immediately think, “I could build that.” And honestly? Respect. But some things are better built *on* than built from scratch. 🎤👇 @francescabuild is here to advise.

A little defense can go a long way ⛹️‍♀️ Last month, we joined our partners at the Golden State @valkyries to celebrate a season of turning blocks on the court into support for the Golden State Community Foundation (@DubsCommunity) and its work creating opportunities for young people across the Bay Area. That's a team effort worth celebrating 💜

9 seasons... 115 charges... 1 lesson: Compliance isn’t something you check once a year Small gaps turn into big problems when no one’s watching. Continuous monitoring keeps you ahead of them. Make headlines for your wins, not your audits.
