Our paper is officially out in @ScientificData! We've built HArD, a database of >31,000 heteroaryl substituents to predict electronic and steric properties. Huge congrats to the team: Turki Alturaifi @0iTurki, Grace Scofield, and Shengchun Wang! 🎉 #CompChem #OpenData

Very excited to be part of the team with Bill DeGrado (UCSF) and @yang2biocat where we designed four-helix bundle proteins to catalyze stereoselective alkene cyclopropanation and carbene Si-H insertion reactions. @ScienceMagazine @Pitt_Chemistry science.org/doi/10.1126/scie…

Thanks for having me @CorinWagen! I am excited to see the future of Rowan!!
Our third Rowan Research Spotlight focuses on Turki Alturaifi (@0iTurki), who studies how to accelerate reaction discovery + optimization with computation. Turki is a graduate student with @pengliu_group (@PittTweet) and previously worked with @bobbypaton (@ColoradoStateU).

Check out our latest work!
Excited to introduce our website and preprint about HArD, a database of heteroaryl descriptors. If you ever wondered "what is the Hammett constant for 2-pyridyl?" or any other heteroaryl group, now you can do a simple search at: hard.pengliugroup.com/ chemrxiv.org/engage/chemrxiv…

Thrilled to share our collaboration with @ASimlandy @EngleLab on L-tert-leucine's unique effectiveness as a TDG. We focused on the impact of the α-substituent on TDG rigidity and stereoinduction modes during migratory insertion. @pengliu_group @Pitt_Chemistry
The final version of @ASimlandy's study is now online in @angew_chem: bit.ly/3paBy4d. New since the pre-print: @0iTurki's in-depth DFT study of the special feature of tert-leucine that make it such an effective TDG across different migrating groups (@pengliu_group).

In contrast, with L-alanine as TDG, the square planar Pd geometry is maintained due to conformational flexibility. This results in lower enantioselectivities due to steric effects caused by the allylic strain between the pseudo-equatorial α-substituent and the imine C–H bond.

The key to high enantioselectivity is the TDG-rigidity-induced enantioinduction, which doesn't rely on direct TDG-substrate interactions. This makes it effective across different migrating groups and offers better enantiocontrol for rigid TDGs.
