I’m a grandfather of 11 grandchildren, and what I’m about to tell you makes my blood boil!
Seventy-nine children, between the ages of 6 and 17, were located during Operation Meridian, the largest missing-child recovery operation in Ohio history.
Now pay attention to the geography!
Akron! Cleveland! Columbus! Toledo!
Four cities with Democratic mayors, operating within Ohio, a state governed by Republicans.
Those are four of the cities where federal marshals worked with local authorities on missing-child cases. The investigation extended across Ohio and even into other states.
And what investigators uncovered is absolutely horrifying!
One 13-year-old girl was discovered concealed in a basement crawlspace beneath a bedroom closet floor. Her 16-year-old sister was located later that day.
Another 16-year-old girl, previously identified as a trafficking victim, was recovered in Toledo.
These are children! Somebody’s daughters! Somebody’s grandchildren!
And here’s my question.
How does a child remain missing for months, or even years, before being located? What investigative resources were available? Were warning signs missed? Were agencies communicating effectively?
I want the records. I want the timelines. I want to know what every responsible agency did, what they failed to do, and whether political leadership provided the resources necessary to protect these children.
And I don’t care whether the responsible official has a D or an R beside their name!
The federal report documents cooperation from local police departments, but cooperation alone does not answer every question about how these children remained missing.
Seventy-nine children were found. Now I want seventy-nine stories examined with the seriousness they deserve!
Because political accountability means absolutely nothing if we’re unwilling to examine the outcomes for our most vulnerable citizens.
