🇧🇷 President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva celebrated with supporters in São Paulo after Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court declared him the winner of Sunday’s presidential runoff against Flávio Bolsonaro, securing a historic fourth term just two days before his 81st birthday. Lula won 51.76% to 48.24%, a margin of about 4.3 million votes. The win makes him Brazil's first four-term president and the oldest person ever elected to lead the country. A former metalworker, Lula rose to national prominence in the late 1970s. As head of the metalworkers' union in São Paulo's industrial suburbs, he led strikes in defiance of the military dictatorship, and he was jailed in 1980, the year he co-founded the Workers' Party.
Lula was only 33 when he led the strike alongside the metalworkers’ union that challenged Brazil’s military dictatorship. He secured wage increases and was imprisoned. His rival, the far-right Flávio Bolsonaro, on the other hand, has had only one occupation since the age of 21: spending his wealthy family’s money and engaging in far-right thuggery.

🇷🇸🗳️ It looks like the Ipsos polling error was simple enough: they polled people who would typically turn out to vote. The poll would have been right if the additional ~600k hadn’t voted.
🇷🇸🗳️ Now that the smoke has cleared it’s pretty clear what happened in Serbia. Basically all the additional turnout voted for the Student List. It was a mass mobilisation effort of an additional ~600k voters.

Throwing around accusations without the slightest evidence. It was always obvious that this character would seek to provoke violence on election day.
As the Serbian people take to the polls in historic numbers, I am deeply concerned by reports that the government is potentially preparing to use violence against citizens aimed at obstructing the voting process. Such attacks are totally unacceptable. I urge Serbia to remain peaceful!

The Saudis have spent billions on overpriced weapons they can't use: "Renowned British military historian and journalist Max Hastings recalls a conversation he had about 20 years ago with a senior British arms exports official, whom he asked about the risks of flooding the Gulf with US and UK weapons. The official replied that those exports represent an important source of foreign currency for Britain, and that a large portion of the equipment would end up abandoned in the desert." Saudi military hardware also ends up in adversary arsenals, as is the case in Yemen.

This goes way beyond general national defense preparedness. This has the earmarks of something urgent and much, much larger scale than anything previously contemplated. Preparations of this nature and magnitude would only be envisioned for an attack on America from a major global power as part of a world war. Given the urgency with which Pentagon officials are announcing this initiative, I’m worried that they know something is coming and they’re not telling us…

I attended the Student List’s closing rally in Belgrade to understand why people would vote for a party with no students, without knowing its leaders, its plans for government, or who is behind @studentblokade. A case of political herd mentality as troubling as it is worthy of study. Listen

I wish I could be that certain. One of the first acts of the regime that took power in Belgrade following the coup on Oct. 5, 2000, was to abandon the claim that the FRY was the successor state of the SFRY. Serbia has never really recovered from the abandonment of such an important matter of principle.

FWIW: I don’t believe the Serbian people will ever abandon Kosovo, turn against Russia, join the NATO that bombed them, adopt the EU agenda - from smoking to LGBTQ - throw away the advantages they enjoy with China etc. The spirit of the Partisans remains. Serbians are a unique people and they like it that way. I like it too.

Foreign policies do change. The foreign policy of the post-Milošević government was very different from that of Milošević. The foreign policy of the current government in Hungary is very different from that of Viktor Orbán.
I agree that in Serbia's foreign policy nothing will change because foreign policy of a country is the outcome of its geopolitical position. However, in a few first months. the atmospherics will probably change. Vucic, without ever acknowledging it, followed Tito's foreign policy. The new govt (if is formed) will at first go back to a blind pro-EU policy until they get disappointed like everybody before them & will then try to reignite relations with China.

Serbia is absolutely a frontline battleground for NATO and EU - and there is definitely an effort to pull Serbia AWAY from Russia, and integrate it into the Western structure. That is the point. Vucic has always been a Russian ally, and has also maintained a very pragmatic balance between East and West alignment. There has been a clever rumor/disinfo campaign likely run via US/British intelligence that Vucic was “secretly being Serbia into NATO” clearly designed to divide & sow doubt. But Vucic has kept Serbia out of NATO. Ditto with similar accusations of being a ‘secret EU agent’. However, Serbia applied for EU membership back in 2009 - long before Vucic came to power. They remain in the accession process. Nothing new there. The same rumor mill/operatives will also say, ‘Vucic is secretly giving away Kosovo’ implying he’s a traitor to the nation - while downplaying the fact that it is a NATO occupied enclave which makes things extremely difficult when it comes to managing provocations from the Kosovo side. There is no doubt multiple actors are involved with overlapping gray areas on this complex Venn diagram - including an Israeli presence in Serbia. One thing I have learned about Balkan & Eastern European politics is that nothing is straightforward, it’s always crawling with spooks, the West are constantly throwing salt on old partisan wounds, and you can always expect at least 3 or more colliding political forces at any major political flashpoint. And objective analysis is nearly impossible to find at ground zero. That is definitely the case here.

Ben-Gvir and Smotrich are not aberrations on the margins of Israeli politics. They reflect a strain of Zionism deeply embedded in the Jewish Israeli electorate. A March 2025 survey reported in Haaretz found that 82% of Jewish Israelis supported the forced expulsion/ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from Gaza, while 56% supported expelling Palestinian CITIZENS of Israel. Those figures shatter the comforting illusion that the problem begins and ends with a handful of extremists. The three leading contenders—Naftali Bennett, Gadi Eisenkot, and Netanyahu—share broadly similar positions on Gaza, the occupied West Bank, illegal settlements, and the systematic repression, subjugation, and oppression of all Palestinians. The central issue is not personality but policy, rooted in Zionist ideology: different leaders, substantial continuity. Any debate over the Abraham Accords must confront this same underlying reality. The Arab countries’ joint statement identifies Israel’s illegal military occupation as the principal source of regional insecurity and instability. On five occasions, Israel has rejected offers of normalization and security guarantees involving all Arab countries and additional Muslim states because those offers required an end to its brutal military occupation, now in its 59th year. The fundamental obstacle is not the absence of a diplomatic opening. It is Israel’s REFUSAL to end the MILITARY occupation. Replacing its prime minister is no substitute for changing that policy—and without that change, a new leader would represent continuity, not a break with the status quo.
I said I wasn’t going to weigh in on who should be prime minister of Israel as that is a decision for Israeli citizens. I did, however, want to share one point of view from the perspective of someone who has an understanding of how Israel is perceived in America. Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich have caused Israel enormous reputational damage with their statements and actions which are presented in the global media as representing the voice and will of all Israelis. As such, a government formed without Ben-Gvir and Smotrich will send a message to the rest of the world that Israel is turning a new page. This will allow Israel to rebuild lost credibility, increase the opportunity for an expansion of the Abraham Accords, and enjoy a better relationship with Democrats and Republicans and Americans at large.

Great overview of the many times the transatlantic pro-war lobby scuttled a peace deal that would have left Ukraine in a much better shape than it is today — and avoided hundreds of thousands of deaths. I would simply add that Ukraine lost its independence and sovereignty in 2014, when it became a NATO colony — which is precisely why it was not allowed to sign a peace deal with Russia.
Let’s go through the peace deals Zelenskyy rejected. • Istanbul agreement, 2022 Ukraine needed to refuse NATO accession, reduce the army, Russia would withdraw from the Kyiv reg., possibly from the Kharkiv, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions. At that point the scale of destruction was still limited and the number of dead was far lower. In April 2022 Zelenskyy declined the deal. • End of 2022 Russian forces withdrew from part of the Kherson region. Zelenskyy traveled to meet Biden and, acc. to my sources, later confirmed by Mr. Blinken in the New York Times, persuaded the WH to continue the war. The precise terms of any proposed deal remain unknown, but sources indicate there was readiness to declare at least a ceasefire. • Beginning of 2023 Through unofficial channels between the United States and Russia, an understanding took shape: Putin agreed to withdraw to the borders that existed before the full-scale invasion—freeing nearly everything conquered that year—in exchange for Ukraine’s refusal of NATO accession and recognition of Crimea as Russian. Zelenskyy and Yermak refused. Since then nearly a million people have been killed or wounded, several million have become refugees, parts of the Kharkiv, Sumy, and Dnipropetrovsk regions have been occupied, more of Zaporizhzhia has been taken, Kherson lies in ruins, the Chernihiv and Sumy regions face constant shelling, Kyiv itself has become almost a front-line city, the energy system has been destroyed, businesses cannot operate, exports have stalled, and the country is degrading. • July 2024 An arrangement that began with an energy ceasefire, modeled on the Istanbul understandings and mediated through the Middle East. While negotiations were under way, Zelenskyy also planned the Kursk operation, which ultimately disrupted all the arrangements. • March 2025 After the Oval Office clash between Trump and Zelenskyy, European leaders gathered in London in early March. The British government stated that a number of options were on the table and that Ukraine had to choose. As always, nothing came of it. Whether Putin was prepared each time to implement any agreements remains unknown, yet on several occasions he carried out what he had promised. Does this remove his responsibility for the deaths, the horrors, and the destruction in Ukraine? No. But the country is degrading, the state apparatus is degrading, and corruption finishes what Putin’s missiles, drones, and bombs did not destroy. Inhumanity has effectively become a state strategy and a national ideology promoted at every turn. Ukraine simply cannot win this way—there are neither economic, nor demographic, nor any other grounds for it. Therefore, if Zelenskyy does not agree to a deal with realistic terms now, Ukraine will be forced to capitulate. And that is deeply alarming, because it can actually cost the country its independence and sovereignty.
