Every time I read Bodil’s threads I come out feeling smarter and better informed.
This is correct. Germany lost in the summer of 1940, they just didn’t know it yet.

This episode, Signal 30, probably more than any TV episode I’ve seen, has the tenor and depth of a great mid century short story. Really powerful and haunting poetry found in the mundanity of a man’s life. But also this, scene which is so funny I rewound it first watch

Correct, the left needs to admit that Gove's school reforms worked and @daisychristo has written a brilliant piece for @ArguablyMag on that today. arguably.uk/p/labour-shouldn…
There's a lot of evidence now on Gove/Cummings DfE-era reforms, where you have to say that they were right, & the unions/the Left/"the Blob" were wrong.
Cameron-Osborne-Clegg was a calamitous era. The macro-economic strategy sowed the seeds of most of the problems we face today (low investment, low-productivity, cheap labour Deliveroo economy with a pumped housing market & crap/creaking public realm, over-exposed to inflationary/deglobalisation era).
But on schooling, the results speak for themselves (while also demonstrating that education isn't a panacea for positive growth/generational outcomes?)

The best evidence that the fads might be causing this problem is that one of the few countries to escape the general fall in scores is England - also one of the few countries to explicitly reject the fads and take a different approach.
Contrast with Scotland - a similar country which had basically the same PISA scores as England in 2012.
Since then the two countries took very different educational approaches and Scottish students are now about a year behind English ones in maths & science (and behind by a smaller amount in reading).
I wrote about this in 2013, but it's even more stark now.
