OTD in 1956, Senator (KY) Alben William Barkley (VP under Truman, 2nd term) was giving the keynote address at the Washington and Lee Mock Convention (Wash. & Lee Univ., VA). He finished his speech by referring to Psalm 84:10, "I'm glad to sit on the back row, for I would rather be a servant in the House of the Lord than to sit in the seats of the mighty." After the last word, he suffered a heart attack, collapsed on the stage and died.
Prior to his role as VP, he was a Senator, elected in 1927.
Psalm 84:10 NIV, "Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked."
