A fire broke out in a single room at the Savannah River National Laboratory (on the massive DOE Savannah River Site near Aiken, SC) around 5:39 p.m. on Oct. 28.
Officials declared a Site Area Emergency after an unfiltered ground level radiological release.
The blaze was extinguished, employees sheltered in place, and no contamination has been reported outside the affected building or the site’s boundaries.
As a precaution, site entrances were barricaded and rail, river, and air traffic restricted.
The FAA slapped a temporary flight restriction over the area (citing a “U.S. government nuclear incident”), which is what triggered the viral alert.
The historic site once produced plutonium and tritium for nuclear weapons.

Most Western writing on the Cultural Revolution stops at "Mao was a monster". That's easy to say, and it explains nothing.
Ken Leong wrote a piece that asks a better question. Why would the man who used the people to win a revolution then turn those same people loose on the state he had built himself?
I mostly agree with his answer. Mao was outgunned and outnumbered, and he won by going around power instead of hitting it head on, a bit like water around a rock. After 1949 he was the rock. When he feared the Party was turning into a new privileged elite, he went back to the method he trusted most, which was mobilising the people against the bureaucracy.
In my view it was at its root an attempt to shake up an old and corrupt system. The cost was real, though, and I don't brush it aside.
It's also one of the most divisive topics in China, and I write about it humbly.
But I don't think the story ended in 1976. Deng kept the foundation and dropped the chaos. Today China debates inside the system, reaches consensus, and puts engineers in charge who test policies before rolling them out. The revolution didn't stop, it just got pragmatic.
People in the West love to say strongmen never learn. China did.

In 1910, The Rockefeller Foundation, along with the Carnegie Foundation funded the Flexner Report.
The goal was to shift all medical schools & all teaching hospitals away from natural traditional root cause medicine & shift towards petroleum based medications & allopathic medicine for profit.
During this time, therapies such as homeopathy, herbal medicine, essential oils, chiropractic & naturopathy were commonplace.
The 1910 Flexner report concluded that these natural healing modalities were “unscientific quackery.”
This report also concluded that there were too many medical schools as well as too many doctors in America & called for the standardization of medical education.
Of course, this was with underlying intentions being that the American Medical Association would be the only entity that could approve medical school licensure in America.
Rockefeller worked with Andrew Carnegie to provide funding for medical schools across the country. This was with the condition, of course, that they only taught allopathic medicine & they were offered grants of significant proportions in order to adhere to these conditions.
Through these grants, primarily fueled by Rockefeller’s petroleum monopoly, helped to systematically remove any mention of plant-based natural treatments along with teachings on nutrition & diet from medical education curricula.
Supported by Rockefeller’s influence on the media of the time, homeopathic & natural medicines were quickly discredited & demonized through targeted media campaigns.

⚖️ A 13-month-old girl was subjected to physical and sexual abuse at the hands of her parents before she was fatally injured by her mother, a court has heard.
The baby girl suffered a fractured skull, broken ribs, a broken arm and burns covering her face during an alleged campaign of abuse before her death
The court heard both parents were known to social services and the police
Prosecutors allege Isabella Stasiak was subjected to physical and sexual abuse and neglect by her parents, Kinga Wydrzynska, 26, and Michal Stasiak, 28. Both deny the charges against them.
Warwick Crown Court heard Isabella had sustained serious injuries on different occasions over at least five weeks. Prosecutor Annabel Darlow KC said the baby suffered two separate episodes of major traumatic head injury, alongside broken bones and bruising.
The prosecution alleges Wydrzynska inflicted the fatal head injury at the family home in Rugby, Warwickshire, when she was the only adult present.
Jurors were told that, before seeking emergency help, she recorded a six-minute video beside her apparently lifeless daughter. The prosecution said the recording showed her adjusting camera angles and worrying about the consequences for herself.
At points, Wydrzynska allegedly prodded and shook Isabella, who appeared floppy with her eyes closed, while repeatedly urging her to breathe. Prosecutors say she later deleted the recordings.
The court heard she called 999 around 17 minutes after recording the videos. Isabella was taken to hospital but could not be saved.
Isabella died in hospital after sustaining a series of injuries including a fractured skull and ribs, a broken arm and a burn to her entire face, the court was told.
Jurors were told Isabella was born in December 2023 and immediately taken into the care of social services. After being placed in emergency accommodation, Isabella was looked after by foster parents for four months before she was returned to her parents in April 2024 – nine months before her death
Wydrzynska denies murder. Both parents deny causing or allowing Isabella’s death, four counts of causing or allowing serious physical harm, two counts of assaulting a child under 13 by penetration and three counts of child cruelty.
The trial continues.
