Interesting @AmCollSurgeons viewpoint on surgeon attire and how it impacts patient trust and perception of competence (link at bottom of post). The author concluded that we should wear more suits and ties at work, just like we do at @ACSCC26 etc. It was a well-written article with great points. But, I'm #TeamScrubs and I plan to stay that way, so I present my evidence-based counter-argument, which is admittedly drowning in bias: For surgeons, patients find scrubs to be either equal or better to formal attire (depending on the study): 1. Classic 2012 @AmJSurgery article that I've quoted 100 times defending my scrubs: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2059… 2. Large 2022 international study from @BMJ_Open showing patients to prefer surgeons in scrubs: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3619… 3. Study quoted in the @AmCollSurgeons viewpoint, which states "Four of seven studies involving procedural specialties reported either no preference for attire or a preference for scrubs" pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2560… 4. Orthopedic study favoring scrubs: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3129… 5. Interesting 2023 @JAMASurgery study on scrub color and how it affects patient perceptions of knowledge, skill, and trustworthiness. It showed green and blue to be on top, but the results varied based on patient age: jamanetwork.com/journals/jam… Here's the link to the ACS viewpoint as well: facs.org/for-medical-profess…

🔬As the editor of @SurgEndosc, I'm with JAMA on its new AI rules. No AI in peer review, no invented citations. Easy call. But let's be real-nobody's putting this genie back. I can't tell when an author ran a paragraph through a model to clean it up, and neither can you. I’m not sure trying to police the software makes sense. The question I care about: will a human put their name on the work and vouch for it as accurate and not faked? This is a platform shift, like the PC was. You either learn to use it well or you get left behind. Medicine won't be the exception. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam… #PeerReview #ResearchIntegrity @SAGES_Updates

This is a very important study and I am extremely happy to see these results published ! It’s a symbolic demonstration that immunotherapy can make it even in phase 3 setting regardless of rarity of the disease or for difficult and hard to treat populations with risk for disparity

Early detection of anastomotic leak saves lives. A recent study published in @JAMASurgery highlights a critical reality in colorectal surgery. Delayed diagnosis of anastomotic leak significantly increases failure to rescue (FTR), meaning mortality after a complication. The key message is clear. It is not just the complication, but also the timing of recognition that determines outcomes. Patients with delayed diagnosis, especially after the onset of sepsis, had: -Higher complication burden -Increased reoperation rates -Longer hospital stays -Significantly higher mortality As surgeons, this reinforces a fundamental responsibility. Vigilance in the postoperative period, early suspicion, and decisive intervention truly impact survival. Improving systems for early detection of anastomotic leak and escalation of care are powerful quality improvement strategies which could improve mortality associated with colon resection. #ColorectalSurgery #PatientSafety #QualityImprovement #Surgery #ClinicalExcellence #SurgicalOutcomes #EvidenceBasedMedicine @ASCRS_1 @AmCollSurgeons @oncodaily @SoyColoproctoMX
