If you’re a content creator… just pay off your house as quickly as you can if you start making good money. Or at least get and pay off a reasonable property or condo to know that you have a lower cost of living. Don’t assume your career will last forever, we’ve seen too many people rise and fall quickly. Yes you can treat yourself a little bit but don’t be silly about it… at least max out your Roth IRA every year before you spend large money on something other than the business. Have 6-12 months of spending in an emergency fund. Pay off consumer debt, and own a reliable car that is easy to maintenance and have it fully paid off. Keep emergency physical cash on hand. Avoid credit card debt but have credit cards available that can cover large scale emergency expenses such as medical or replacement of all your equipment necessary to do your work. Have media insurance and gear insurance. You can get this via Hiscox if you have an LLC. Look into income protection insurance policies. If you have a family, have a nice insurance policy in place, and a contingency for what you want to happen to your channel and content and accounts even when you’re gone. Make sure you have a listed beneficiary on your bank accounts or they will have to fight to get that money. Take some time to create income streams outside of YouTube and unrelated to YouTube either via another platform or by investing into an offline business.
