Excl: Teachers could be allowed to work four-day weeks under government plans to give schools greater flexibility over working hours. Schools will still have to provide lessons five days a week but Lucy Powell, the education secretary, has asked an independent pay review body to consider how to scrap the requirement for individual full-time teachers to be available for work on 195 days a year. The reforms could allow teachers to complete their contracted hours over fewer days and ministers are also considering removing the ceiling on teachers’ salaries - both in a bid to help schools attract and retain staff. A government source stressed that the five-day school week would not change and that the reforms were about bringing the rules for council-maintained schools into line with those for academies. thetimes.com/uk/education/ar…

It’s not a true 4-day week yet, but it’s a start. “It follows repeated warnings that inflexible conditions were driving experienced staff out of teaching.” South Cambs Council fixed their recruitment crisis by implementing a 4-day, 32-hour week - the teacher recruitment crisis could be resolved with similar ambitious adaptations. It’s time for a 4-day week. ⏰

Let's leave the corporate presenteeism of the 1900s behind. We need smarter work, better health, and progress we can genuinely feel in our day-to-day lives. It’s time for a 4-day week. ⏰

The 5-day, 40-hour work week was standardised a century ago. Almost everything else has sped up dramatically since then - automation, robotics, computers, the internet, emails - so why are we still plodding along on Henry Ford’s schedule? It’s time for a 4-day week. ⏰

When workers have time to rest, exercise, and find some balance, absence rates drop and well-being soars. A 4-day week is a serious health strategy that can benefit the individual, the organisation, and the economy as a whole. It’s time for a 4-day week. ⏰

The 4-day week is a global phenomenon. 🌎 “This has been proposed in the United States in the 1920s and ’30s, and it almost passed and became law, right? So if people thought it could work then, it could still work now.” - Anirban Acharya Ph.D., Le Moyne College

A 32 hour four day work week without loss in pay would do more for our overall quality of life and wellbeing than nearly any other singular socioeconomic change

The Government would be foolish NOT to consider trials of a 4-day week in the Civil Service. The usual suspects might be leading with their knee-jerk reactions, but the reality is, we already know a 4-day week CAN work in the Public Sector. South Cambs District Council save £400,000 a year with their 4-day, 32-hour week on full pay. The Autonomy Institute predicts £1bn of savings if other Councils followed suit. Add a 4-day week for the Civil Service into the mix and the potential savings balloon even further. All PCS are negotiating for is the right to trial a new way of working that, evidence suggests, should be a win-win for workers and the employer. We should all be asking the Government to ignore the noise, be bold, and trial a policy that the majority of the country supports - the 4-day week.

Why are Green councils looking at a four-day week for staff? Here’s one reason: “The average wage of a senior town planner in the public sector starts at around £38,000, according to the Royal Town Planning Institute. But in the private sector the same employee starts at around £42,000. Needless to say, a lot of planners start off at local authorities and then make the jump.”

What do people with a 3-day weekend... do? 🤔 Research shows they spend time with family and friends, engage in hobbies, exercise and support local communities. Shorter work weeks build stronger societies. It’s time for a 4-day week. ⏰
