Let’s talk a bit about a skill that doesn’t get discussed much: Hero’s Will. Depending on the faction, the skill name and icon may be a little different — for example, Cygnus Knights’ Will, Floran Hero’s Will, and so on. Their effects are the same, and they can all be learned at 4th job. In 5th job there is also another skill with the same effect, Will of Erda. That means you can have two skills of this type at the same time. Below, I’ll just use Hero’s Will to refer to all of them. From what I’ve seen, aside from veteran MapleStory players or people who spend extra time studying skills, a lot of players barely use this skill. There are two main reasons. First, the skill itself has a very long cooldown, so you don’t get many uses in a fight to begin with. Compared with other skills, its impact on combat can look pretty small. Second, the description is extremely short. Players who haven’t looked into it carefully may find it confusing and not know what it actually does or why it’s valuable. Some people try it, feel like it doesn’t do much, and give up. In reality, it’s a bit different. Hero’s Will does have a long cooldown, and you won’t use it many times in a boss fight. But if you use it well, it can give you more uptime and even save you from a few deaths. First, you need to look at the skill as two separate parts: On cast, it immediately removes some Abnormal Statuses. For 3 seconds after use, it grants immunity to more Abnormal Statuses. The most valuable part of Hero’s Will is the second effect, though the first effect can still be useful in some situations. Even though both parts mention “Abnormal Status,” the first part mostly only clears some non-unique statuses — things like Darkness, Skill Lock, Seduce, Control Reversal, Zombify, and so on. These are not statuses that only specific bosses apply. In current bosses, you don’t often need to clear these. Bosses like Pink Bean or Crimson Queen can apply the statuses mentioned above, but even if you get them, they usually don’t affect survival much. At most they interrupt your damage. That said, there are still some good uses right now. For example, the Romantic Slime summoned by Angel Slime applies Seduce, and touching Will’s webs in P3 applies Skill Lock. Those are situations where being under an Abnormal Status can get you killed. The second part is much more interesting. The 3-second Abnormal Status immunity is basically similar to Corsair’s All Aboard. You can use it to block the common statuses mentioned earlier, as well as things like Papulatus’ Curse, Damien’s Root Trap, Slime’s Guardian Ray, Lucid’s bombs, Lotus’ falling objects, Vellum’s pillars that cause Stun, and similar effects on future bosses that Hero’s Will can also ignore. The difference from Corsair’s skill is that you only have immunity during the 3 seconds after you press the skill. Most importantly, you have to use it before you get hit by the effect. If you press it after you’ve already been affected, it does nothing. So honestly, this skill is harder to use well. It takes practice. You need to understand each boss’s mechanics, know which skills put you in danger if they land, and then time Hero’s Will accordingly. The difficulty also varies by attack. Falling objects and Guardian Ray are obvious and give you enough time to react. Harder examples are things like Root Trap, which don’t have a very obvious telegraph and don’t give much reaction time — but they can still be blocked. I’ll show a few examples in the video below so you can better understand how to use Hero’s Will. Also, I only turned skill effects up to the maximum so the skill would be easier to see. In MapleStory, especially in parties, there are already a huge number of skill effects on screen. So unless I have a reason not to, I almost always keep them close to the minimum. If combat looks too messy for you, or you can’t even see the boss’s attacks clearly, you should adjust your skill effect display settings too. @MaplestoryU #MSU
