We all know that you can skimp on providing for the future, but eventually you will pay.
A government that is preparing you to eat cold beans from a tin while the water pipes freeze has finally admitted that it has failed in its most basic duty to invest for the future.
From energy to water, from defence to border security, they cannot keep us safe, because our politicians have been too self-interested and too indifferent to invest in the things we need the state to do.
We joke about taxing the air we breathe but its surely just a matter of time.

York cobblestones. 2006 vs 2026.
Well maintained in 2006. Can’t be arsed to maintain properly and just plaster with tarmac patches in 2026. British civic pride decay in a nutshell.

Young lads up here can't get a start. Shipyards gone, pits long gone, apprenticeships like gold dust. And Burnham's answer is free movement for 450 million people chasing the same jobs. Train our own fucking kids first.
So much like with fertiliser plants, we reduce our own refining capacity, then tax the imports
So done with this Government, this country

A quote from @FUDdaily which I think well worth extracting from its longer context :
“What we can say is that nothing is going to improve any time soon. We can’t have cheap energy because the government has decided against it. We can’t have functioning borders because the government has decided against it. We can’t have decent paying jobs because the government has decided against it. We can’t have safe communities because the government has decided against it. We can’t have viable armed forces because the government has decided against it. I struggle to think of any major problem afflicting this country that isn’t a conscious choice of the people who rule us.”
Yet, if there is a general election next May, as many predict, the government might get re-elected after years of immigration and welfare-led gerrymandering.
Welcome to the end of the world, as someone once sang.

Read all of this. It is more important than you think. Wayne Dixon is a councillor in Leeds. He doesn't get involved in foreign policy issues. No standing with Ukraine or Palestine or Israel or wherever. He doesn't even get involved much in national issues. He just focusses, laser like, on doing small things that make the lives of his local constituents better. Cleaning up footpaths covered in wet leaves. Harassing the local authorities until they fix potholes. Cleaning up graffiti. Trimming hedges so they look neat and tidy. Liaising with the police to deal with antisocial behaviour. Ensuing that the local schools have enough places for every local who wants to send their kids there. Getting bus stops put in the right place when roads are re-laid or new roads are built. Making sure that green spaces where kids play football are not flogged off. Ensuring that important community groups and support networks are helped as much as they can be.
It is hyper local politics. It is the work that only somebody with high energy and who knows the local area can do. If we had 20,000 Wayne Dixons, the cumulative transformation in the entire country would be shocking over ten years. Any sports fan knows that marginal gains have huge cumulative effects when achieved consistently over a period of time (see the Chicago Bulls and Team Sky). Same with countries. 150,000 little, easy, cheap things over 10 years and you have almost a new country. This is achievable right now, with no changes in legislation or 'new elite'.
More politics should be about exactly this: putting right the 20 streets closest to where you live and making the lives of people who live there better. Remember: there are black and white pictures of a young Lee Kwan Yew sweeping the streets of Singapore. That's where he started his politics. Of course we need to get the big things right -- and Britain is facing at least three existential problems that only central government can address. Yet simultaneously, we also need this.

Basic infrastructure in our country is literally crumbling.
And yet the charity that's supposed to maintain London's bridges is funnelling millions to climate activists and groups with alleged ties to Hamas.
We are truly through the looking glass now.
