On 20.4.2022 I had the honour of speaking to PM @ImranKhanPTI. My kids were so happy that I got to speak to the Skipper. They also said, “Mum, you made him smile”. In the video you’ll hear why I follow and will always follow Khan Sb. #BehindYouSkipper

I'm more curious as to why they seem to be unreceptive to debate and discussion. You would think that would be their thing.

Short answer - they aren't actually interested in education, beyond it being a covert way to exercise their personal politics. If they were, they wouldn't be advocating something as fundamental to any child's education as 'oracy' - they would be modelling it routinely.

Why are some advocates of oracy so rude on here?

I think the key thing is to identify the most widely promoted versions of oracy. These appear to Cambridge's dialogic teaching and Voice 21. Both have been through (somewhat limited) RCTs, and both have mainly been found to have no statistically significant positive effects.

What a great read! The mention of 'APP' grids had me hyperventilating, what a logistical nightmare they were, having had firsthand experience of launching these at the time 🤯 Also, the phrase 'doing the same thing again & again and expecting a different result springs to mind 😵‍💫

The danger with focusing on oracy is (obviously) that teachers might prioritise students talking over actually teaching them stuff. I've seen scores of 'turn and talk' that seek to engage kids at the detriment of actually explaining things carefully.

Shoes on while praying, three prostrate instead of two and salaam towards the left only. These are hired actors who didn’t bother to research the role they were supposed to play.
On a train in Italy you don't pray on the floor in the middle of people. That's not prayer, it's a show of force. Everyone is free to believe what they want, but public space must be respected. Enough with fanaticism.

That's why I think opportunity cost is the single most important idea in school improvement. Every hour our teachers—and our students—spend on one thing is an hour they don't have to spend on something else. And this matters most of all for students who find learning hardest...

I'm not seeing the oracy advocates dealing with the objection that oracy is unlikely to be the right leadership priority for schools, particularly those which are underperforming. It's easy to write stuff about speaking being great and accusing opponents...

Proud of Pakistani cricketers wearing pink to raise awareness of breast cancer. Also important to point out that although it mostly affects women but men can get breast cancer too. @itvcorrie doing a fab job of raising awareness of this. 🎀
Pakistan will wear pink kits against England today as the PCB dedicates the fixture to raising breast cancer awareness 🩷
