An off-duty Hammond police officer faces felony charges following a high-speed, multi-vehicle crash that killed a local driver. Alonso J. Lopez, 34, surrendered to authorities after state police completed their initial crash reconstruction. He is facing: OWI Causing Death (Level 4 Felony) Reckless Homicide (Level 5 Felony) The Incident: Investigators say Lopez was driving a 2024 Chevy Silverado at a high rate of speed on Columbia Ave near 165th Ave when he struck a Toyota Highlander entering the roadway. The collision killed the Toyota driver, Thomas Hunt, Jr., 34, of Gary. A third vehicle was also hit in the aftermath; that driver was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Alcohol and excessive speed are believed to be contributing factors. State police note additional charges may follow as the investigation continues. @93wibc
