Never miss a pond opening… 👀 Hummock Pond was opened to the Atlantic Ocean this morning by the town’s Natural Resources Department. The great pond is opened twice each year in the spring and fall to lower nitrogen levels, raise salinity through the exchange of brackish pond waters with high-quality offshore waters, and allow entry of marine species including herring, blue crabs and other species. Hummock Pond covers more than 220 acres of the island, with an average depth of eight feet. “More than a mile long, but largely a narrow pond running northeast-southwest, Hummock Pond, which includes Head of Hummock Pond connected to it by a ditch, is an outwash pond extending from the middle of the western portion of Nantucket down to the ocean with a barrier beach in front of it,” according to the Nantucket Pond Coalition. “Prior to 1978, Hummock Pond formed a hook-shaped water body, but the ocean storm, part of the Blizzard of 1978, hacked off the westside of this pond known as Clark Cove into its own pond, now separated from Hummock by beach, dunes and the ocean end of Sanford Farm’s Ram Pasture.“

LAST CALL AT THE GAZEBO 😭 These were the final moments at The Gazebo Monday night, as owner Luke Tedeschi said goodbye to a gathering of loyal customers and longtime staff ahead of the closure of his establishment after 34 seasons in business. While the property will likely reopen next year under a new operator chosen by Nantucket Island Resorts, it was the end of an era for Tedeschi and his team. After addressing the crowd, Tedeschi drew the winning ticket for the last mudslide, served in a crystal chalice, which was was claimed by Spencer West, one of his bartenders and an island native. The raffle was a fundraiser for Addiction Solutions of Nantucket. Monday marked the final night of the final season for the Gazebo as the island has come to know it. Steve Karp’s Nantucket Island Resorts declined to offer Tedeschi an extension of his lease after 34 years, or even give him an opportunity to match any offers from other bidders. “This will be the last year of the Gazebo’s mudslide as we know it and the reason is because after this being the 34th season, I’ll be moving on because I did not get a lease renewal or even a lease renewal offer from the company that owns the real estate that I currently have a lease with, Nantucket Island Resorts (NIR),” Tedeschi told the Current in May. “You know, that’s the way that term leases are, but after all these years, I brought the mudslide to the Gazebo back in 1993, and this will be the last year of my formula and my mudslide as we’ve all got to know it, to enjoy it, and it’s become iconic.”

The work includes resealing the lantern room glass, masonry repairs, metalwork, and - as seen in this video - repainting the exterior.
