The Shamus Award arrived. “Best PI Novel of 2025” looks pretty good. It will look even better hanging on my wall. Thank you, PWA. I am honored.

Toni Morrison was a unique voice, a poet in prose. equating Toni Morrison with a generic person of color is well-intentioned but like equating James Joyce with a generic Irishman or William Faulkner with a generic Mississippian man of his time---no, no, & no. great writers are masters of language & their visions transcend their identities. however, it is not wrong to suggest that the writer becomes a unique expression, of sorts, of their "people"--Joyce empowered by his Irishness, Faulkner by giving up "large" subjects & focusing on a single mythic county in Mississippi. loving a writer is always good no matter the reason or reasons.
I could not disagree more. Reading Toni Morrison absolutely floored me because I realized what rich differences PoC experience, what things they ruminate on, what hurts or brings joy that I never would have known. The voice you hear is shaped by everything.

really? what a narrow view! Anderson did in fact write sympathetically & convincingly about girls & women; even Hemingway has a story from an adolescent girl's perspective, "Up in Michigan," that is a knockout; not to mention D.H. Lawrence, Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Hardy & (not least) Shakespeare. if men can't write about women, women presumably can't write about men. educated people can't write about lesser-educated people, Black writers can't write about brown people, people from Maine can't write about people from Vermont, no one can write about anyone except the sickly face in the mirror.

Yeah and he's a man purporting to write about a woman's inner life. I'll pass.

So I'm not a former cop, as I remain actively employed as a sergeant in, I think, good standing, but hopefully the rest of this kind Publishers Weekly review of Dark Country is accurate.

Psyched that the ultra-talented @Charlie_Halford is back as the voice of Kurt Argento for the audiobook of Dark Country! This time he's teaming up with the first-rate narration of @ZachVilla and Kiff VandenHeuvel. Thank you, gentlemen!

A co-worker told me that yesterday was Arthritis Awareness Day. I looked down at my creaky knees and informed him I was already aware and no such day was required.

Having long been aware of those tech bros who read my work as utopian porn, where they’ve taken that doesn’t exactly surprise me.

"The Color of Money" was released on this day in 1986. Superb sequel to "The Hustler" from Martin Scorsese. Fantastic adaptation by Richard Price of Walter Tevis's entertaining novel. Paul Newman won a much-deserved Oscar for his incredible return as 'Fast Eddie.' It's a powerful and staggering performance. Highlights: remarkable cinematography by Michael Ballhaus; spectacular editing by Thelma Schoonmaker. One of my ten favorite films of 1986.

I'm on meds for high blood pressure. My wife is a lot more concerned about it than I am. I tell her high blood pressure won't kill me, for I will die in battle and when I do, there will be a sword in my hand and then she tells me to just settle down.

This book is outstanding. Author is former NYPD homicide. Get it.
In 1997 I bought a copy of James Ellroy’s MY DARK PLACES at the @BNBuzz in Yonkers, NY. Today THE KILLING YARDS is on a shelf at the B&N in Hingham, MA. Only took 29 years.

Yes! People don't realize how hard he worked on his acting, and how seriously he took the craft. And he did so in an era when film was treated as "product" by big studios ("Casablanca" was shot in a week), years before "The Method."
Bogart delivers and then some as ‘Commander Queeg’ in THE CAINE MUTINY (1954) Apparently after shooting of this take the film’s crew applauded. #HumphreyBogart #JoseFerrer #EdwardDmytryk
