The West Virginia Hospital Association says Certificate of Need is “essential in protecting local hospitals from being undermined by for-profit, out-of-state providers.” In Chapmanville, a hospital owned by out-of-state companies asked for a hearing on a West Virginia independently-owned non-profit’s clinic. The judge found it didn’t qualify to challenge it. The Authority approved the clinic 180 days after Boone Memorial applied. The case is now before the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. One thing the State Board of Education did not include in their proposal is the cost. Taxpayers deserve to know what’s being asked of them by @WVEducation. Especially when WV is already spending record amounts on government-run education.
West Virginia's school funding formula needs reform. But @WVEducation's proposed overhaul is a step backward: more complexity, less local flexibility, and no fiscal estimate. Let's go back to the drawing board and build a formula that puts students first wvgazettemail.com/opinion/op…

Just gonna leave this here… 👀 Nearly the same spending after inflation. Far fewer students.

Useful work by @AFPWV compiling school building utilization for every county. Data like this should be published routinely by the state, not obtained through FOIA. It should inform hard decisions on closures, consolidation, the funding formula, etc.
NEW REPORT: West Virginia’s public school buildings are only about 55% full. 🏫 Using county-level data obtained through a FOIA request, AFP-WV found that the state has about 416,000 seats for roughly 230,000 enrolled students. That’s 1.8 seats for every student. Meanwhile, total public school funding rose 16% in just two years, a $663 million increase. As the debate over the school funding formula heats up heading into the 2027 Legislative Session, lawmakers should fund students, not systems, and ensure parents direct every dollar. 👉 Read the full report: bit.ly/4dySiIY

West Virginia’s public schools have the physical capacity to seat 416,004 students while currently enrolling 230,714. Not a rural phenom either: Kanawha County alone has 17,947 empty seats, more than the entire student population of nearly every other county in the state. Total public school funding rose from $4.149 billion to $4.812 billion in just two years—a 16% increase. Over that same stretch, the state has kept operating nearly the same number of buildings it had when enrollment was tens of thousands higher. West Virginia doesn’t have a funding problem. It has a structure problem. 🚨 New report lays out what a student-centered funding formula, that funds kids instead of buildings and lets parents direct the dollars, could look like. ↓

The West Virginia Hospital Association is worried that if we repeal Certificate of Need, someone will cherry-pick the profitable services and walk away from maternity care. I have some news for them... New op-ed in WV News is out today:

Enrollment is down across the nation, not just in the Mountain State. On average, our school buildings sit half-empty. Meanwhile, West Virginia taxpayers are spending more on public schools, and for fewer students, than ever before. Despite the siren song of the tax-and-spend left, simply spending more on government-run education will do nothing to fix the inherent flaws in our school funding formula or help our kids succeed. State lawmakers should swiftly take bold action to fund students, not systems while ensuring parents direct every dollar.

A stunt that proves little. In WV you established a "school" with no kids, teachers, or parents. A school with no kids never opens. Education choice lowers barriers for new providers and trusts parents to judge, instead of letting bureaucrats define what counts as a school.

This is disappointing news. Nuclear power will play a crucial role in creating energy abundance in America. @AFPWV urges state policymakers to continue to engage in this important conversation as we work together to lower energy costs for hard-working families and make West Virginia the centerpiece of American’s energy future.
West Virginia has bowed out of a federal initiative that could have bought a nuclear energy hub. The state submitted a one-page, one paragraph letter to withdraw from consideration. buff.ly/Z7JfpJi

AI will revolutionize how West Virginia does healthcare, giving doctors and nurses more time with their patients. 🩺 “The technology we’re talking about can automatically generate structured clinical notes from conversations between patients and providers.” —Gov. @MorriseyWV

Federal permitting reform represents a HISTORIC opportunity to turn West Virginia's energy advantage into MORE jobs, a BETTER economy, and STRONGER communities. Congress should follow @SenCapito's bold leadership by adopting this LANDMARK legislation! Let's get Washington out of the way so we can build West Virginia's future. West Virginia built a one-stop permitting dashboard and told data centers to fund their own power so residents wouldn't subsidize them. Roughly $96 billion in private investment and more than 19,000 projected jobs since.
