Over the past six months, I've been talking to Sir Ranulph Fiennes's closest friends & family about his situation for @Telegraph. They are deeply worried. There is a lot more to this story & I hope it won't be last we hear about Ran. telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/09…

Scoop: Britain is removing its military presence from Sierra Leone, citing security concerns. @AHABDiggins breaks the news in UnHerd today – and argues that we are wasting an economic opportunity. "It sits in a key position geographically, with the largest natural harbour on the west coast of Africa... "English is widely spoken and Britain, unlike the region’s other former colonial masters, is largely looked on fondly... "Into the breach, Sierra Leone has welcomed other partners... the Chinese have rebuilt the old British railway to neighbouring Liberia, which last ran a passenger service in 1975; its massive, 90-carriage long trains now ferry gold, bauxite and coltan." An excellent bit of longform reporting.
Travelling through Sierra Leone 25 years after its war, you can’t help but call to mind other, more recent conflicts, such as Afghanistan and Iran. So what went right in the 2000 Sierra Leone intervention — and what is going wrong with more recent Western interventions? ‘Whatever else his qualities, J.R.R. Tolkien was a lousy lecturer.’ A super review of @djtaylorwriter’s new Tolkien book — ‘by far the most entertaining study of Tolkien I’ve ever read’ — by @AHABDiggins.

Earlier this year, I went to the Andaman islands for @Telegraph to investigate the fate of some of the world's last isolated tribes – what I found was shocking. Thanks to @Survival & many others for their help. telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/11…

And episode 5 of The Rabbit Hole Detectives podcast - with @RevRichardColes @CatJarman and me - is out today, wherever you get your podcasts. Cat on saunas is not to be missed. Richard, as ever, is ridiculously well informed. This is our weekly antidote to grim news….

“a coming-out novel in the truest sense. [Don’s] loss of virginity … is described with muscular, slippery immediacy. Most giddying are the passages that evoke the slow-mo slide of [his] professional collapse.” TIEPOLO BLUE @TheCriticMag 🙏 @AHABDiggins thecritic.co.uk/issues/febru…

It was an especial pleasure to talk to Don Walsh -- aged 91, he's only surviving member of the Trieste expedition, the first sub to reach the bottom of the Challenger Deep. It was like chatting to Neil Armstrong. Here he is greeting @VictorVescovo after his dive. What a dude.
