For a future with our CO2 sponges, the peatlands! The #Power2Peatlands conference co-organised by @CarePeat and our partner @MijnNatuurpunt just ended yesterday with more than 500 experts attending to help restore these overlooked habitats. Peatlands need to be included at the heart of #Restorenature policies and do you know why? Here are some superpowers of peatlands: 🌱A healthy, wet peat is loaded with carbon. Peatlands cover only 3% of the Earth’s land surface, but store 600 billion t of carbon. When these lands dry out, they release tonnes of greenhouse gases! 💧 They also hold a huge amount of water protecting lower-lying towns from flooding, which we will be facing more in the upcoming decades. 🪺 Peats are home to some of the most precious and unique organisms and are our guardians of biodiversity. 🫂 They are our lifelong friends. Peatlands can be found in all countries in Europe, except in Malta. They have been around for thousands of years, yet we only protect 16% of them within Europe. It’s time to conserve these lands that are right at our doorstep with the help of public and private partners alike. ❗️Read and spread the word about the #Power2Peatlands conference declaration to protect and restore peatlands: t.ly/pj-Ag
