Parashat Lech Lecha, A Chiddush
I'll give you a powerful chiddush on Parashat Lech Lecha that will change how you see your own spiritual journey.
Look, when HaKadosh Baruch Hu tells Avraham Avinu "Lech Lecha," He's not just telling him to physically leave. The Zohar HaKadosh in Parashat Lech Lecha explains why Hashem chose Avraham specifically - because everyone else in his generation were vicious, wicked people who were far from doing good. They saw the Torah, they saw the insights of the Torah, they saw the behavior of the Torah and how it causes people to do good and how it's just, but they simply didn't care. They didn't think about it.
Here's the chiddush that applies directly to you today: Parashat Lech Lecha is one of the most applicable teachings for dealing with our current generation, especially for people who are newly religious, whether converts or Baalei Teshuvah. Why? Because the greatest struggle you have is your environment. You're surrounded by reshaim - whether it's family members who are Mechalalei Shabbat, or they lend money with interest, or they're just simply bad people according to Torah. They may be nice, fun to talk nonsense with, but in reality, according to Torah, they're reshaim.
The guy says, "Listen, it's hard for me to keep Shabbat when my uncle comes over every Shabbat showing me his phone all the time, inviting me to parties, to nightclubs, offering me drugs." You're exchanging the greatest source of good in the world with an empty hole in the middle of the desert.
That's what Lech Lecha means for you - leave everything behind that's holding you back from Torah. Hashem is telling you the same thing He told Avraham: I will make you a holy nation, but first you must have the mesirut nefesh to separate from the wickedness around you. Avraham didn't know where he was going, but he trusted Hashem completely.
That's real emunah.
