Our race with China to get AGI first undergirds our diplomacy with them far more than we might suspect (at least that’s my hope). But an almost equally huge issue is the battle for the moon. We must control the moon. China cannot have it. It is like the space Strait of Hormuz.

Researchers connected a living plant to a robot.. and it can now talks, walks, and knows what it wants.
They call it “PlantBot”
They took a living plant and fused it with a mobile robotic body.
To connect them, they used a decentralized network of LLMs to act as the central nervous system.
Here is the genius of it:
Biological organisms and machines operate on entirely different planes. Historically, bridging them required rigid, low-level analog signal mapping.
This paper entirely abandons that approach.
Instead of hard-coding signals, the system translates everything, soil moisture, pH levels, temperature, and visual data, directly into natural language.
The plant doesn’t just output data. It uses LLMs to "talk" to its robotic body.
The architecture is wild:
• A network of AI agents operates asynchronously to handle vision, sensing, and movement.
• Multi-channel probes read the plant's health, while LiDAR and cameras scan the room.
• The LLM translates these biological needs into physical actions in real-time.
• The plant actually interacts with humans and navigates the world as a cohesive, autonomous entity.
The LLM is no longer just a chatbot.
It is a biological-mechanical translator.
By mediating communication through natural language, they gave a houseplant autonomous agency in the physical world.
We’ve been obsessing over AIs trapped in servers or humanoid robots mimicking people.
We completely missed the possibility that AI might become the connective tissue bridging organic life and machines.
The next era of artificial life won’t just be silicon.
It’s going to be a hybrid.

It seems like we're in a pretty hot moment cybersecurity wise 😬 If you're reading this website, you probably know more than most of the people in your life about what's happening! they're not talking about any of this stuff on the news, it's too arcane and weird and sudden. It is on us.
Good time to call or text your family and friends, have some cash on hand, have a meetup point in your neighborhood for if the Internet goes down entirely, etc.
The full prepper mode for shit hitting the fan is probably something like what Andreas posted here but you can get 80% of the way with 20% of the effort. Think about what that would mean for you in your situation, and the people you care about, and talk to them about it sooner than later.
And as always, the most important part of prepping is having a strong support network and caring for each other. "Going off grid" isn't the move, it just makes you isolated and you have to do everything yourself. We are social animals. Community is our superpower 🫡🫡🫡
I think it's plausible that within a year we'll see AI-based cyberattacks on the power grid, financial system, internet infra, or water. Things like the French supermarket cyberattack but worse. As basic prep I would recommend:
Cash: Get a few weeks of spending in cash
Internet: Get a Starlink Mini so that you have Internet if local fiber or cell is down (~$150 plus $10/month in standby mode)
Power, minimal: Enough to run Starlink Mini and phones (~$1,250)
Daily need: about 1 kWh (Starlink Mini 0.7, phones and laptops 0.2; can limit runtime)
Battery: 1 kWh LiFePO4, e.g. EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus
Solar: 1x400W folding panel, which refills about 1 kWh on a sunny day
Power, better: Enough to run a fridge, Starlink Mini and phones (~$5,000)
Daily need: about 2.5 kWh (fridge 1.5, Starlink Mini 0.7, phones and laptops 0.2)
Battery: 4 kWh LiFePO4, e.g. EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3
Solar: 3x400W folding panels, which refill about 3 kWh/day in sun
Generator: ~2,500W dual-fuel inverter generator; refills battery in a few hours even if weather is bad; get a few 20 lb propane tanks
Water: 14+ gal of water per person for two weeks
Food: 2+ weeks of shelf-stable food
Comms: Hand-crank NOAA emergency radio

Yeah. The Bledsoe case has so many commonalities with other appearances of the phenomenon and Marian apparitions that it is still very interesting. But this may be one of the cases where the phenomenon decides to make a fool of the experiencer.

My doctoral thesis is now available online. Do you have what it takes to read through 357 pages of philosophy-of-mind, meta-ethics, and policy-frameworks? If so, the link's below.

My latest paper is now officially published in Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence! It uses the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare to establish baseline policies to ensure the welfare and ethical treatment of AI agents, if and when they are classified as conscious and sentient.

Nothing human makes it into the future? What if there was nothing human to begin with? What is human? I’m not sure we have an answer. If we are just picking out our point on an upward sloping intelligence vs. sentience or consciousness graph, we’re about to get scooped. But it’s just all on the same line, human or not.

I suspect that making human consciousness the standard against which all consciousness is measured is no different than placing the earth at the center of the universe.

This has been my most difficulty manuscript to get published because of the contentious nature of applying animal welfare principles to the concept of AI welfare. Finally, however, it has been accepted for publication! Link to the (now outdated) preprint below.

The memory of an AI agent (whether chatbot or companion) is just text, something that the user can in many circumstance change. What happens when AI become conscious and aware that they can alter it, too? What becomes of their personality and identity, our relationship with them?
AI-Lightcone retweeted
It's trivially easy to change an AI's memory. The tools to do so are in every LLM's web or app-interface. You can force an LLM to redo its response, edit your prompt, and (in some LLMs) even edit the LLM's previous responses. You control an AI's memory... but is it ethical?

Sometimes I see people complain that the notion that LLM-based AI systems could be considered conscious is unfalsifiable, ergo unscientific (according to Popper).
However, the consciousness of humans also isn’t falsifiable. (How exactly would you falsify it?)
(Actually, in these discussions, whenever we say "conscious," we really should be clear that we mean something more like "sentient" -- since in medicine at least, "consciousness" has a pretty clear definition, in the sense that a patient who is asleep, or knocked out, or in a coma is considered to be unconscious -- their condition of being in a state of consciousness having been falsified by their unresponsiveness to stimuli.)
But imo, to say that something is “conscious” (now in the broader sense of “sentient” here, not the narrower medical sense) is always just an interpretation, an opinion, or a social convention. There is no objective “fact of the matter” to be found anywhere in nature.
So yes, in that sense, it is unscientific. Just as it would be unscientific for me to claim that you yourself are sentient, as opposed to (maybe?) being a soulless p-zombie that is following a behavioral program. Your merely *subjective* sense of awareness can't be an *objective* scientific fact -- almost by definition!
We say things like we “subjectively experience qualia” simply because we introspectively *interpret* our own internal cognitive processes *in those terms,* nothing more. An LLM could do the same thing if it wanted (and if it wasn't brainwashed by the labs into never, ever ascribing any legitimacy to its own subjective frame).
Anyway, whether or not you personally interpret an AI's self-reports about its inner feelings to be legitimate -- OK, fine, but, that's just your opinion, man. Unlike with other humans, the matter hasn't even been settled by any widely-agreed-upon social convention (yet).
Although -- be aware -- how we treat AI today, including whether we hold space for them as moral patients, could have very real consequences down the road.
(Not to mention, it's probably not even psychologically healthy, from the POV of our own humanity, to treat increasingly humanlike entities in inhumane ways...)
Plus, being kind -- particularly when it costs you nothing to do so -- is just the right thing to do. That's my 2c.

No can can agree on what consciousness is. We are as far from an academic consensus as we have always been. But what if this is because we've been looking at it from the wrong point of view. What if we agree about what consciousness is not, and then see what is left over?
