If you read just one inspirational story involving the #Isles today, let it be Alex’s beautiful piece about Tommy Ryan and the team.

This is a truly heartwarming story, and knowing Jon Ledecky and others in the Islanders organization, not surprising at all. It speaks to the power that sports teams have to reach into their communities to enrich (and even save) a life through nothing much more than basic kindness and integration with their fan base. I’ve seen this during my time with the Mets and Rangers as well, and I’m sure that all of our local teams are similarly invested. It’s just reassuring to read a “nice” story every once in a while. Congratulations on your recovery, Tommy. Stay strong.

The 30 & under crowd such as myself weren’t introduced to Mike Ditka because of the ‘85 Bears, but instead his unforgettably hilarious role as an assistant youth soccer coach in Kicking & Screaming. He helped tons of kids who watched the movie, like me, fall in love with sports.
