Maldives has made substantial gains in population health and financial protection, including universal coverage for Maldivian citizens through the Aasandha scheme. At the same time, its health system is adapting to a growing burden of noncommunicable diseases, population ageing, continued reliance on an expatriate health workforce and the challenges of delivering services across a widely dispersed archipelago.
The HiT also highlights priorities for the years ahead, including revitalizing primary health care (#PHC), strengthening health workforce, expanding mental health services, improving migrant health and building climate resilience into health system planning.

He also highlighted public financing reform as an important piece of the puzzle in strengthening domestic financing. In practice, he noted, sovereignty depends on countries having the fiscal space to fund their own priorities.
A key reflection from the session was captured through the ๐๐จ๐๐๐ framework:
๐น๐old reform
๐น๐จnified efforts
๐น๐nnovation for access

For APO, these discussions reinforce the importance of connecting global health architecture reform with the realities of national health systems, grounding reform in evidence, country priorities and implementation.
The session also builds on discussions around the 77th WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific (#RC77), where questions of country ownership, regional roles and the future of global health governance were also brought to the fore.

The session brings together policymakers, researchers and health system leaders to explore how social participation can move beyond consultation and become a meaningful part of health policy and decision-making.
The discussion comes as NHA 19 puts participatory public policy at the centre of its theme, โA Thriving and Empowered Society: Positive and Empathetic Public Policy for Health,โ with an emphasis on translating participation into policies that respond to peopleโs lived experiences and generate tangible improvements in well-being.

Ahead of the 77th session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific (#RC77), the World Health Organization Western Pacific Region (@WHOWPRO) convened a virtual side event to bring regional perspectives into the ongoing Joint Process on Global Health Architecture (#GHA) reform.
The session was led by Dr Nima Asgari (@N_Asgari), Director of the @AP_Observatory.
Across the discussion:
๐ก Speakers emphasized the importance of country ownership, stronger regional coordination, collective voice, solidarity and subsidiarity, while ensuring that the Western Pacificโs diversity is reflected in the reform process.
๐ก The discussion also underscored the need to start with what countries need, then determine where regional and global action can add the greatest value.
The perspectives shared during the session, together with the interactive prioritization exercise, will help inform discussions at #RC77 on the Regionโs priorities for GHA reform, including the challenges the future architecture should address and how functions should be organized across country, regional and global levels.

Dr Nima Asgari highlighted that "families would continue to play an important role in many Asian settings, but the direction should be towards a mixed model, where families are supported by stronger community-based services, formal long-term care, an appropriately trained workforce, social protection and sustainable financing."
He also reflected that, from a healthy ageing perspective, older people should be seen not only as recipients of care, but as people with agency, voice and continued participation in families and communities.
The panel featured Glen Liau ๅปๅญๅผบ (National University Health System, Singapore), Hoda Abou-Jamra (TVM Capital Healthcare), Somsak Akksilp (ASEAN Centre for Active Ageing and Innovation (ACAI)), and was moderated by Dina Alborno (@econ_enterprise).
