The Most Revd Dr Justin Badi Arama, Archbishop and Primate of ECSS and Bishop of Juba, presided at the service. Among those contributing were the Revd Pauline Walker, Canon Andy Wheeler, former ECSS Primate the Most Revd Dr Daniel Deng Bul Yak, and the Rt Revd Anthony Poggo, Secretary General of the Anglican Communion. The Bishop of the Diocese of Liwolo in the Episcopal Church of South Sudan, the Rt Revd Joseph Aba Nicanor, has issued an 'Urgent Humanitarian Appeal For Emergency Assistance to Internally Displaced Persons’ amid rising conflict in South Sudan. The appeal references recent armed hostilities that have caused the large-scale displacement of an estimated 10,000 civilians in Liwolo Payam, Kajokeji County, Central Equatoria State, along the South Sudan-Uganda border. The appeal warns that families have been sleeping in the open without adequate shelter, exposing vulnerable civilians such as children, pregnant women, nursing mothers, older people and persons with disabilities to ‘hunger, disease, trauma and harsh weather conditions’. The diocese calls upon the South Sudan government, humanitarian organisations, the international community, churches and compassionate individuals to ‘respond urgently to this unfolding humanitarian crisis’. As the former Bishop of Kajo Keji in South Sudan, the Secretary General of the Anglican Communion, the Rt Revd Anthony Poggo, shares his prayers and reflections on the 15th anniversary of the independence of South Sudan: ‘Today marks 15 years of South Sudan’s independence. ‘On 9 July 2011, I joined thousands of South Sudanese citizens, together with friends and partners of the nation, at the John Garang Mausoleum in Juba, where independence was proclaimed. It was a day filled with hope and anticipation for a future in which the people of South Sudan would live in freedom, peace and prosperity. ‘Sadly, just over two years later, on 15 December 2013, South Sudan descended once again into conflict. Since then, nearly 2 million people have been displaced, while more than 2.2 million have sought refuge in neighbouring countries. The country continues to face severe economic challenges and stands on the brink of economic collapse. ‘Despite these difficulties, preparations are underway for general elections planned for December 2026. As South Sudan reaches this significant milestone of 15 years of independence, let us continue to pray for its people and for the nation’s future. ‘In the words of the final line of South Sudan’s national anthem, I pray “O God, bless South Sudan.”’ Find out more about the Secretary General at bit.ly/4frk5MA

More than 100 Anglicans with ecumenical guests from around the world, including The Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally, went on a pilgrimage on 1 July through the historic city of Derry/Londonderry. The pilgrimage was part of ACC-19. The pilgrimage was organised by the Right Revd Andrew Forster, Bishop of the Diocese of Derry and Raphoe, with members of the local church and community. Through prayer, reflection and encounters with the city’s history, the ACC-19 pilgrims explored the Church of Derry’s ministry in the midst of sectarian conflict and Northern Ireland’s peace process. It was an opportunity to draw lessons for a global church serving communities in conflict around the world, including South Sudan, Sudan, the Middle East, Myanmar and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Setting the scene for the day, Bishop Andrew expressed his hope that the pilgrimage would be an opportunity to: "Journey further into the heart of God, journey further into the heart of other people’s experiences, and journey further into our own discipleship and journey of faith.’ Of the delicate work of peacebuilding in the city, he added: ‘Peace is always a fragile thing that must be handled with care — the more care we use, the more we value it and see it as precious." The Secretary General of the Anglican Communion, the Rt Revd Anthony Poggo, has backed an ecumenical statement expressing ‘compassionate care for Christians and all people in Cuba’. It follows an international ecumenical solidarity visit to Cuba during Holy Week made in response to the humanitarian crisis caused by the economic embargo imposed on Cuba by the US for more than six and a half decades. The statement highlights the delegation's discussions about ‘the humanitarian situation, the role of churches in accompanying vulnerable communities, and the need for policies that prioritise human dignity’. It shares that ‘Throughout the visit, delegation members witnessed and heard painful testimonies of the suffering of the Cuban people in this situation’. The ecumenical delegation, which included representatives from the World Council of Churches, brought together senior leaders from global Christian communions. The Secretary General of the Anglican Communion has shared a message of support ahead of the Installation service for the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd and Rt Hon Dame Sarah Mullally. The message reads: It is a joyful moment to prepare for Archbishop Sarah Mullally’s Installation as the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury. May God sustain and equip her as she serves his Church and prepares to take up her public ministry. The office of the Archbishop of Canterbury carries an important pastoral and collegial ministry within our global Anglican Communion family, working to foster Christian unity and partnership in proclaiming the hope of the Gospel. I am full of joy that so many Primates and representatives of Anglican Communion churches are making the journey to Canterbury to pray and mark this occasion together. We also think of our sisters and brothers who will be praying and supporting from afar. We consider especially those who are living in places of extreme conflict and hardship. We assure you of our prayers at this time. During the Archbishop’s Installation service, worshippers will gather at Canterbury Cathedral. There, set into the floor, at the east end of the nave, is the image of the Compass Rose – a symbol of the life and reach of our Communion. Just as a compass points North, South, East and West, it reminds us that the love of Christ is universal, reaching around the globe and calling all people and every nation. It is a love shared through the mission and service of every Anglican member church around the world. At the heart of the Compass Rose is the verse from John 8:32: ‘The truth shall set you free’. As we welcome the new Archbishop of Canterbury, let us pray that God will grant her courage to lead with truth and wisdom, and assure her of our partnership in the Gospel. Together, in the power of God's Spirit, let us proclaim the Gospel, serve our communities, and build bridges of peace in our world. Read a summary of messages on Anglican News. ⛪️“He invited us all into brave, grace-filled conversations about the pain of war, the struggles of identity, the injustice on those least responsible for climate change, and the deep wounds of abuse. He called us to respond with faith and compassion. That legacy will endure.” – The Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia. ⛪️“He was a courageous voice in our time; especially on climate justice, care for the poor, and the dignity of every human being.” – The Anglican Church of Kenya. ⛪️“Throughout his life and ministry, he has been a witness for the Gospel and a champion for the poor and marginalized.
