Congratulations to assistant professor Salma Elmallah who received a $1 million grant from the Sloan Foundation for a four-year interdisciplinary project examining how natural gas, backup generators and deliverable fuels such as propane and diesel continue to persist and expand as the U.S. pushes toward electrification and decarbonization. Working with collaborators at Temple University, UPenn and MCubed Consulting, the team will explore where these “shadow grids” are growing, who relies on them and what their expansion means for rural, suburban and lower-income communities. PHX-DUST records the 15th dust storm of the year and first of the post-monsoon season! A short-lived Category 1 dust storm moved through Phoenix on Saturday afternoon ahead of a line of thunderstorms, making it an isolated, short-duration, high-wind-gust event. 📍 Dust concentrations peaked at 1,021 µg/m³ southwest of downtown Phoenix. 📡 The storm was recorded at one monitoring site. ⏱️ Elevated dust concentrations lasted one hour at the monitoring site. 💨 A gust front moved through the valley with strong winds and rain. 📸 Footage by Reagan Cawley, Mike Olbinski, Ariana Pup and ADOT. ⚡ The Phoenix Dust Storm (PHX-DUST) Scale classifies dust storms after they occur, ranking them from Category 1 to Category 5 based on dust concentrations. Subcategories describe each storm's geographic extent, duration and wind gusts. ⛈️ Explore the data and submit your monsoon footage at PhoenixDust.asu.edu. ⚠️ Follow @NWSPhoenix for real-time weather alerts. #PHXDust #AZWX #ASU #Monsoon2026 #Haboob #DustStorm

A piece of exploration history is coming to #ASU. 🌎 Through a new 10-year partnership with @AmericanGeo, ASU will co-steward the iconic Fliers & Explorers Globe, arriving on the Tempe campus this winter. The nearly century-old globe features the signatures and routes of 80+ legendary explorers, including Amelia Earhart, Sir Edmund Hillary, Neil Armstrong and the Apollo 8 astronauts. Former #NASA astronaut and oceanographer Kathy Sullivan added her signature during a Sept. 15 ceremony in NYC. At ASU, the Globe will become an interactive, living resource through a permanent exhibit, legacy globe replicas at the ASU Library Map and Geospatial Hub and Coor Hall, a digital twin, coursework, K–12 programming and public events. Stay tuned as this new chapter of #Exploration, #Cartography and #GeospatialInnovation takes shape at ASU! Read more: news.asu.edu/20260929-arts-h…
