Firearms tracing is a law enforcement technique to find the first purchaser of a recovered firearm. ATF tracing services can also help investigators uncover trafficking patterns. Last week, four defendants pleaded guilty to moving dozens of illegally obtained guns from New Hampshire through the Akwesasne Mohawk Indian Reservation and into Canada. Many of these guns were later recovered at Canadian crime scenes. This #HSTF case began with a firearms trace, a recovered gun in Montreal linked back to a New Hampshire purchaser, which ultimately revealed a sophisticated network moving firearms, narcotics, and humans across the U.S.-Canada border. This case underscores the power of firearms tracing and intelligence‑driven policing. This #FirePreventionWeek, ATF is implementing safer practices for federal explosives licensees and permitees. Under Final Rule RIN 1140-AA00/AA20, effective Oct. 26, ATF is finalizing two 2003 interim rules implementing the Safe Explosives Act. The rule clarifies when federal explosives licensees and permittees must report changes in responsible persons and authorized employees; eliminates the requirement to verify the identity of persons accepting delivery on behalf of distributees; and amends regulatory exemption language related to transporting explosive materials. ▶️NIBIN Win: In June 2024, a Florida drive by killed a mother and her 4 year old. A tip identified the shooter. One month later in Georgia, that same suspect crashed during a chase and ran into the woods, dropping a bookbag. Atlanta ATF K-9s found the bag, with his ID and two guns inside, one with a machinegun conversion device. His DNA was on both guns. NIBIN showed that one of those guns was used in an Atlanta shooting two weeks earlier. He was arrested, pled guilty, and was sentenced in August to 25 months. The Florida murder case is still pending trial.
