The SaaS hype cycle is gonna reach the top in 2023 and burst.
I’m making most of my income on SaaS but here is why I think it’s 10-20 months until we see a strong decline in the profitability of SaaS:
→ the time/cost of making SaaS is halving every few months. A typical solo maker can launch one a month. e.g. @levelsio @socodemaker @d4m1n & 100+
→ soon every possible tool will have 100+ equally good implementations (some of which will be purely cloned, which is happening already now)
→ boilerplates will come with inbuilt modules for most things. So you pay $100 and get a boilerplate that got a blog, payment, cms and etc. This means makers will have more inhouse and less bought from third party saas tools.
→ we will still buy fundamental things like hosting, emails, etc from corporations.
→ this will lead to a big switch, most saas tools will offer one-time LTD deal (as @dhh predicts)
→ so the potential of one given saas will drop when it comes to the revenue. The clients will spread accross multiple vendors.
→ the mohtly SaaS pricing will go from $40 in avg to $5 in avg
→ marketing will turn into single most important job for each maker, since coding is pretty much can be done by too many. Even design and UX will be greatly avaible to most, via boilerplates, design systems. So there will be 1000s of options for the same SaaS, all looking equaly good
→ marketing will go to the next level, which is similar to what movie and music industry does, e.g. labels in music, and movie producers.
→ same will happen in indie/startup world.
It's happening already. We see many unofficial alliances here on X, with groups of 2-10 makers. We also all know other famous mafias(paypall, YC, SF..)
I will end it here.
I will share my thoughts on how to navigate in this new world in my next posts.

Wow. That this is Facebook’s official statement by Andy Stone after being sued by nearly every state in the union for its role in depression and death by suicide after burying evidence and fighting legislation to rein it in. No wonder their surrogates are otherwise silent. 1/3

You asked for the answer. IMO the answer--the only scalable answer--is for original content to be digital signed by its creator, in a way where all can easily/instantly verify the authenticity of digital content, and unsigned content becomes suspicious.
This is now possible.

Let's discuss Step-Back Prompting
Step-Back Prompting is like taking a step back to see the bigger picture before diving into the details.
It's based on the observation that we humans often simplify complex problems by first identifying the key, high-level concepts. We extract the essence before getting lost in the weeds.
Let's take an example:
Original question: "What was the name of the first dog sent into space by the Soviet Union in 1957?"
This requires finding an obscure fact about a specific dog many years ago. Easy to get overwhelmed by the details.
Instead, we first take a step back and ask - "What were the major milestones in early space exploration history?"
Now we're dealing with summarizing the key events in space travel. Much more manageable.
The high-level concept here is "space exploration milestones". We'd retrieve key facts like:
- Yuri Gagarin was the first human in space (1961, Soviet Union)
- Sputnik was the first artificial satellite (1957, Soviet Union)
- Laika was the first animal in orbit (1957, Soviet Union)
Armed with this knowledge, we can now easily infer that Laika must have been the first dog in space sent by the Soviets in 1957.
So in a nutshell, Step-Back Prompting is like zooming out of Google Maps to first see the bigger picture and main roads before searching for a specific store. Going top-down instead of bottom-up.
We teach the LLMs this strategy of abstraction before reasoning by showing them examples of stepping back and extracting high-level concepts. This grounds their thinking and improves complex reasoning.
