Early-stage type 1 diabetes... what is it?
Type 1 diabetes doesn’t develop overnight. The immune attack on insulin-making cells happens gradually.
We call this symptomless phase, before type 1 diabetes fully develops, early-stage type 1. There are 3 main stages.

@mdelibeg preprint entitled "Myeloid cell protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) drives retinal neurodegeneration in diabetic mice" is now @ BioRxiv biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/… @AbdnLifeScience @BHFScotland @TheBHF @NHSGrampian
• Inhibition of myeloid cell PTP1B prevents development of acellular retinal capillaries in diabetic mice
• PTP1B mediates superoxide production, ⬇️mitochondrial membrane potential + ⬆️macrophages cell death in chronic conditions associated with abnormally high glucose.
The new work suggests that #inhibition of PTP1B prevents #diabetic #retinopathy by decreasing myeloid cell-driven inflammation and PTP1B represents a therapeutic target for prevention of diabetic retinopathy.
