We came into the Army together. Looked out for each other at 30th AG before Infantry school. Then we both came down on orders for the 101st Airborne Division. I remember us getting to Fort Campbell. I vividly remember us laughing when they assigned us as roommates in the barracks at 20th Replacement, and how the cadre called you “19 Letters” because they didn’t want to say “Solorzano-Valdovinos” every time. Then we both went to 1-506th Infantry Regiment, and then we both were assigned to Able Company, 2nd Platoon, as soon as we got to Iraq, and you went to 2nd Squad and I went to 1st Squad. Our careers paralleled each other from the time they started to the time they stopped. Pranks on Lough. Guitar Hero in the barracks. I remember you teaching me how to use an iPod in Iraq because my country ass had never even heard of one. Watching backyard wrestling videos of you from before the Army...and getting the absolute shit smoked out of us for getting caught multiple times by SSG Vickers and SSG Falk with Jäegermeister in the barracks. But I also remember you being the definition of a professional and one of the best soldiers I've ever been around. It's been a long 16 years, and I still think about you every day, and I always will. Maybe that's why you left before we did: to recon the area and make sure the LZ is safe for when we get there.
