The commune is not nostalgia for the past, or a utopian project to be created from nothing, but the very stuff of our shared humanity. It forms the basis both for social life in general, and the potential for society to re-appropriate its capacity to govern by and for itself.

In this volume, Öcalan emerges not only as a strategist for resolving the Kurdish question but as a visionary for democratizing the entire region. He closes with urgent questions that speak directly to our global moment: How should we live? What must we do? And where do we begin?

Instances where communities escaped state and capitalist control and created forms of autonomous participatory governance include the Zapatistas in Mexico and Rojava in Syria. Yet urban communities can also appropriate institutions within the system, to resist the state system.

Academics — at least critical academics — are increasingly engaged in writing works that sound like they are meant to change the world, in an institutional context designed to ensure there is almost no possibility they might actually do so.

Since Öcalan’s words really are, before anything else they might be, a form of political action, their ultimate meaning can only be known by what they do."
