Proud to announce that I was awarded an NSF CAREER grant (!) to study Fe nutrient adaptation in Synechococcus #cyanobacteria Seeking #PhD student for F25. Lab and field-based transcriptomics and physiology experiments. Dusting off my lab webpage w/ info but feel free to email me
Had a blast sharing the wonders of #cyanobacteria #phage & #MicrobialCentrism on #MattersMicrobial podcast
Also chatted about things like 3D printing, iron, photosynthesis, life in weird places, band names...
so much!
Thanks again @markowenmartin

It's Thursday, so a new episode of #MattersMicrobial! This time, Nathan Ahlgren joins the #QualityQuorum to discuss marine cyanobacteria, oxygen, and the viruses that interact with them. #MicrobeTV @univpugetsound @ASMicrobiology Please share!

Did you know there are more than bilayer #membranes in nature? Meet the #archaeal monolayer and its surprising mechanical properties! New #preprint! (1/7)
Thrilled to share that @B_Robicheau, postdoc in my lab, will be heading off to bigger and better things as a new tenure track professor! Congrats! 🎉

1/6 Excited to share our latest work @UWaterloo published in @Virus_Evolution on horizontal gene transfer of a #virus gene (nblA) involved in the disassembly of phycobilisomes, cyanobacterial light-harvesting complexes: doi.org/10.1093/ve/veae082

Excitement is building for the 12th iteration of the Aquatic Virus Workshop to be held at the fantastic Oceanologic Observatory in Banyuls-sur-Mer, France during 5-9 May 2025. We have a great lineup of speakers, and a nascent website: avw12.sciencesconf.org/?lang…
Today our lab finally read the fascinating nitroplast paper. So cool! And the SXT images are amazing.
We are wondering what are the pink structure in Fig. 2B and movies? Centrosome or something similar?@kendraturk @Jonathan_Zehr

The camera just loves you Manning! Front & center is Manning is the photo a masters student from my lab who graduated today!
“While this may feel like an ending, it really is just the beginning. It’s the beginning of a great adventure — the rest of your life — one that only you can define and shape,” Gary Labovich ’81, chair of Clark's Board of Trustees, told the Class of 2024. bit.ly/4awp60y
Such an honor to present @VirusesImmunity as an honorary PhD recipient at @ClarkUniversity commencement today. So impressed by her work on so many fronts. Immunology. Long COVID. Vaccine development. Representation in STEM.
Looking for postdoc in #marine #microbiology #virology? We have many avenues for phage-host research: single-cell methods, 100s of #cyano & #phage isolates, bioinf analysis of monthly & weekly time-series. Happy to sponsor application for Simons Postdoc

Boston, population 675k, has 18 city-run pools.
Worcester, population 206k, has...one.

ALT Take a swim in summer 2024: Boston pools will be open Last summer, Boston residents couldn't access 10 of 18 city-run public pools due to “facility issues” — issues that officials say will be mostly resolved this summer thanks to about $34M that’s been budgeted over the next few years for pool renovations and repairs, reports the Herald’s Lance Reynolds. — Boston Herald (from Massterlist)

Seeing buzz about PNAS article on the problems of using PCA w/ time series and spatial data, mostly in neurobiology. Wondering how this impacts microbial datasets. @PatSchloss or others want to chime in?
pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.23…
Phantom oscillations in principal component analysis
My 1st take: don't use PCA in the 1st place on microbial, 16S rRNA data. Use PCoA, nMDS instead (e.g. see this tutorial youtube.com/watch?v=G5Qckqq5… @patschloss)
But I'm sure there are microbial community papers out there using PCA...
Anyone else want to add? I'm no expert here...

Aren’t school committees meeting’s supposed to be streamed live via fb? Can’t find it there. Am I missing something? This needs to be clearly accessible/visible @worcesterpublic @TracyNovick @SueMailman
Finally some better bike infrastructure in Worcester!
FYI, evidence shows that adding bike lanes in most cases boost business and employment sciencedaily.com/releases/20…
and they improve safety for bikers and cars drivers alike
