Indigenous communities are hit hardest by climate change & water inequities. It’s incredibly disheartening that AB 2218 (a bill meant to fix these injustices) was vetoed. Tribal leaders aren't backing down and neither are we. We'll be there to support every step of the way.

Five days after signing a law formalizing a state apology for “harms and atrocities” against California’s Native peoples, Gov. Newsom vetoed two additional bills that tribes had championed, one on water and the other on sacred sites. cal.news/4rU1ays 📸 Loren Elliott

“Newsom’s veto of AB 2218 is a backhanded betrayal of California Tribes and a direct contradiction of his apology and promises of reconciliation,” said Malissa Tayaba, vice chair of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians.

“For nearly 200 years, CA has made decisions about our waters without us, disregarding the tribes whose cultures, communities and lifeways depend on them.” Newsom had instead aligned with “special water interests that profit from extractive and exploitive water management.”

There are 3 bills on @CAGovernor’s desk focused on wildfire prevention, forests, and public lands. AB 1891 funds prescribed and cultural burns. AB 2494 manages our state forests health, NOT timber output. SB 1268 ensure park access for everyone! bit.ly/4hb24lp

In a letter to the editor, a San Francisco resident criticizes Governor Newsom’s veto of AB 2494, arguing it traps state forest management in outdated 1940s standards that prioritize logging over modern ecological stewardship. mendovoice.com/2026/09/lette…

🚨 #AB2218 & #SB811 are on @CAgovernor desk. AB 2218 meaningfully incorporates Tribe’s voices into state water. SB 811 creates weak oversight for hazardous metal shreddings. 📞 Call Newsom and urge him to protect California Communities, Tribes, and Environment (916) 445 2841

💧 California’s water policies have lasting impacts on Tribal communities, cultural resources & ecosystems. AB 2218 would strengthen Tribal participation in state water decision-making. It’s now on Newsom’s desk. Call (916) 445-2841 and urge him to sign AB 2218!

You need to hear about these 3 clean water bills on @CAGovernor’s desk: SB 1125 helps pay the water bill. SB 1085 checks the water supply before approving big projects nearby. AB 2218 gives tribes their right to make decisions about their water supply.

Tribal communities deserve a seat at the table over decisions that affect their water supply. AB 2218 by @Ash_Kalra requires state water agencies to include tribes in water decisions and advances!

Many sectors of the energy industry are required to plan for what happens if they close their facilities. So should oil refineries. That's why I authored #SB1259. I am glad to report that the Senate passed the bill today. @APEN4EJ @CBECal @cejapower Read more. sd38.senate.ca.gov/news/sena…

While the Trump administration works to dismantle key climate pollution protections, California can lead with the Clean Skies Act to cut diesel pollution and protect public health. Californians: tell your assemblymember to vote YES on AB 1777: on.nrdc.org/4dthGPa
