.... or how Google tried to too little, too late, and out of fear to (badly) compete with ChatGPT using their same approach to AI answers, rather than an “open web” friendly interface (please see what Yahoo! did with Scout) and now suffers the consequence... along with millions of sites losing traffic and revenue.
Yahoo! did it with their AI search experience, Scout: teapawt.org/aleyda/status/20180511… - sadly Google tried very little to not copy ChatGPT approach and... now we see the outcome.

To sum up today's news:
- Reddit stock is down because of AI answers
- Google stock is down because of AI answers
- Your web traffic is down because of AI answers
Happy to see that worked out well for all parties involved

Reddit's earnings call has exposed the new reality for thousands of companies.
"AI mode does not drive traffic. Not for us and not to anybody as far as I know. It used to be a traffic driver. Now it's not." - Reddit CEO.
The reality is that AI is fundamentally changing the way that humans access the internet.
Just 24 hours prior to this statement, Google's stock erased -$480 billion on the same issue: AI is disrupting the traditional search model.
For decades, the internet operated on a simple model. Search engines directed users to websites, and those websites monetized the traffic.
AI is destroying this business model, and it's happening at an accelerating pace.
The traditional model of internet traffic is rapidly becoming outdated.
The internet has entered a new era.

🚀 Excited to see the new Finchling homepage live, giving a much clearer look at how we help digital PR agencies discover campaign opportunities for clients 👇
If you manage PR clients across different industries, you know how much time goes into monitoring the news, identifying relevant stories, and finding relevant angles for campaigns... Finchling helps to solve this by scanning thousands of sources to find relevant opportunities, including unexpected connections you might miss with keyword alerts.
The new homepage shows how it works, with examples of how you can:
* Find stories relevant to each client: Understand why an opportunity has been flagged and how it connects to their business.
* Develop campaign angles: Explore ideas for expert commentary, data stories, and newsjacking based on each opportunity.
* Plan ahead: Discover relevant events up to a year in advance, with time to pitch ideas, get approval, and prepare campaigns.
* Learn from competitor campaigns: See what they’re launching, which angles they’re using, and what your team can learn.
The goal? Spend less time hunting for stories and more time developing campaigns worth pitching 🙌

Pieter Levels (@levelsio) has a habit of confidently misreading data and treating anecdotes as evidence 🧵👇
This is what happens when you train your AI and your following base with skewed world views, dodgy studies and huge biases: they amplify your crooked narrative.
At least 85 people this year died from Spanish train accidents, and likely it will grow to 100 at the end of this day
Very tragic and this makes Spanish trains one of the most dangerous modes of transport now
~100x more dangerous than flying commercial
~40x more dangerous than non-Spanish trains
And every trip is nopw as dangerous as jumping from a plane and skydiving
Two highly deadly train accidents in one year, that's so extreme and unlikely that it makes it at as dangerous as flying one of the most deadly airlines in the world, the Nepalese Yeti Airlines that keeps crashing due to the mountainous terrain
Pretty exceptional in a bad way

New manual actions incoming for AI tools and app-building platforms? 😬
Google updated their document on preventing user-generated spam - and warns tool owners to look out for new manual actions. 😬 They specifically call out "platforms and tools that let users publish shared pages, generated content, or web apps" as well as "generated outputs, or interactive tools."
What was added:
▪"Only index content meant for Search" - talks about tools that let users create shareable pages, generated outputs or interactive tools.
▪Watch GSC for alerts "if Google issues a manual action against your site or detects security issues."
▪"Check the page indexing report and Search performance report regularly for unexpected spikes in indexed pages, impressions, or queries that don't match your platform's purpose." They also mention to look for a small number of users generating a large share of indexable URLS.
They don't mention specific tools, but we have recently seen that conversations from Muse (and before that ChatGPT and Claude) were indexed. And also we've seen people creating ChatGPT sites that in some cases have deceived people when they get indexed.
Sounds to me like Google is putting the burden of curation onto the tool makers now. If your tool lets people create content, you need to be really careful about what gets indexed!

👀 @semrush has updated its AI Visibility Index which now shows insights across 9 markets across 22 industries for ChatGPT, AI Mode, Gemini and AI Overviews, clearly showing that despite sharing the same language (English) there are clear differences in sources used and brands showcased across them which are clearly localized ... so if you're still thinking that "what works in the US will work across other English speaking languages because most of the citations come from the US" ... think twice.

📊 38% more YoY Google searches, 8% fewer organic search clicks… and 41% fewer paid search clicks?! Welcome to the fourth SERP Squeeze Monday! 👇
This week’s query: “coffee tumbler”, comparing September 2026 vs. 2025 in Google US.
What does the @Similarweb data show? More searches, but fewer clicks for both organic and paid results:
* Search volume: 23.6K to 32.5K (+38%)
* Organic search clicks: 3.6K to 3.3K (-8%)
* Paid search clicks: 3.9K to 2.3K (-41%)
Comparing @ahrefs' September 2026 vs 2025 Top 10 SERP snapshots show that:
* In 2025: The SERP showed 10 traditional organic search results.
* In 2026: The SERP shows only 5 traditional search organic results, with an AI Overview, Shopping pack, Top Stories, Image pack and People Also Ask.
Also, Reddit is now shown in 3 of the 5 traditional organic search results in the 2026 snapshot, along with Amazon and Zara Home.
It's (again) not you... it's Google. Growing search demand doesn’t automatically translate into a growing organic search traffic opportunity. And a higher organic share of clicks doesn’t necessarily mean more organic traffic either.
Looking forward to your own examples 👀
