Thanks to everyone who joined us at @edtechweek for our session, “The Human Advantage: Workforce Demand for Decision Skills in the Age of AI.” Our panelists Ayisha Irfan of the Augmented Intelligence Advisory, Shrinidhi Rao of The Burning Glass Institute, and Olga Polites of @MediaLitNow had a conversation about workforce trends, AI literacy, media literacy, and classroom practice, moderated by David Samuelson, Alliance Executive Director. It was a full house! One thread of conversation particularly resonated with the audience: don’t give your agency to an AI. As generative AI automates more technical and cognitive tasks, workforce demand is shifting toward uniquely human capabilities: judgment, adaptability, discernment, and decision-making under uncertainty. Thankfully, these are skills schools can develop through Decision Education. We look forward to more conferences ahead!

Happening today! As generative AI automates more technical and cognitive tasks, workforce demand is shifting toward uniquely human capabilities: judgment, adaptability, discernment, and decision-making under uncertainty. That's what our panelists will be exploring at EDTECH WEEK today, October 15, in a session called “The Human Advantage: Workforce Demand for Decision Skills in the Age of AI Panel.” David Samuelson, our Executive Director, Ayisha Irfan of the Augmented Intelligence Advisory (formerly an AI Policy Leader at Google), Shrinidhi Rao of The Burning Glass Institute, and Olga Polites of Media Literacy Now will connect workforce trends, AI literacy, media literacy, and classroom practice. The discussion will explore how schools can develop learner agency in complex digital environments and share examples of how educators and organizations are integrating decision-making, AI literacy, and media literacy into instruction and career readiness pathways. Attendees will leave with research-backed insights, classroom and workforce examples, and concrete strategies for embedding decision-making and AI literacy into K–12 learning experiences. Let us know if you’re in New York. We hope to see you there! #EDTECHWEEK edtechweek.com/2026-agenda

What if the most dangerous vulnerability in any network isn't a line of code, but a person who hasn't learned to question what they're being told? Vice Admiral Jan Tighe, one of the Navy's most decorated commanders and a pioneering career cryptologist, joins host, @AnnieDuke, to explore the intersection of cybersecurity, foreign manipulation, and the urgent case for Decision Education. Jan and Annie trace the arc from Cold War signals intelligence to today's AI-saturated information ecosystem, examining why protecting our networks means little if we haven't first strengthened our thinking. We had a great time in Houston last week for a convening of our Policymaker Fellowship! Alliance staff and Policymaker Fellows visited Gregg Elementary School, a Houston Independent School District (HISD) Future 2 school, to see Decision Education in action. We observed students in math and Art of Thinking classes, where students practiced their media literacy skills by identifying the validity of sources and learning about biases that influence how we process information. Plus, Alliance staff lead learning sessions on Decision Education and design thinking, and our Policymaker Fellows worked with their state teams to brainstorm approaches to implementing Decision Education in their own states, while aligning with district and state priorities. We look forward to even more learning and collaboration with the second cohort of our Policymaker Fellowship throughout the year!

Will you be at the National News Literacy Conference in Salt Lake City this week? On Thursday, October 8, join Julia Lennox, Ed.D., our Education Growth Initiatives Manager, for a breakout session on Cognitive Biases and the News Ecosystem. Educators will explore how cognitive biases can act as “thinking traps” that shape how we interpret news and information. Through interactive exercises and real-world examples, educators will learn strategies to help students recognize and resist cognitive biases, slow down their thinking and make informed, fact-based decisions.

The Alliance went to Long Island for the LEAD LI conference last week! Julia Lennox, our Education Growth Initiatives Manager, and Jonathan Klomp, Alliance Senior Teaching Fellow and Principal of North Babylon High School, presented a workshop on the science of decision-making. Participants learned why slowing down our thinking can strengthen decision-making processes and help students become more reflective and informed decision makers. Thanks to all the educators and administrators who came to our session! We’re excited to connect with more and more education professionals at upcoming conferences.

Last week, Alliance staff hosted an event to share findings from our work with @kcpublicschools. Thanks to funding from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, we expanded our College & Career Decision-Making Incubator program to a district-wide initiative within Kansas City Public Schools aimed at integrating decision-making skills into students' college and career exploration. The event brought together local organizations, representatives from @KauffmanFDN, and KCPS administrators and teachers to connect ideas, opportunities, and people to build on this work together. Joyce Ngyuen Hernandez, KCPS Director of College Access, shared how Decision Education tools helped students shift their thinking from "What do I want to do?" to "What are the possibilities?" Thanks to everyone who attended and to Casual Animal Brewing Company for hosting us! We look forward to more opportunities to connect with education and foundation leaders passionate about empowering students for the future.

What do we lose when a machine can think for us? On the latest episode of The Decision Education Podcast, @erichorvitz, Chief Scientific Officer at @Microsoft, joins @AnnieDuke to explore what it really means for humans to stay "in the driver's seat" as headlines about an AI takeover proliferate the news. Drawing on decades of research into human-AI collaboration, Eric argues against the passive framing of an AI "takeover," making the case that governance, design, and clear values determine whether these tools sharpen human judgment or quietly erode it. Plus, hear Eric draw on lectures he’s given for the Society of Decision Professionals, arguing that the best AI decision tools help people clarify what they value.
