LibreOffice might be the greatest revenge fork in open source history.
In 2010, Oracle bought Sun Microsystems and inherited OpenOffice, the free office suite millions of people depended on every day.
Oracle had a well-known reputation for acquiring software and squeezing it dry, and the developer community was not going to let that happen to a tool they had built their workflows around.
They created the Document Foundation, forked the entire codebase, and launched LibreOffice. Same software. Zero Oracle.
Oracle told contributors to resign from the OpenOffice council. Nobody listened.
The community kept building, as if Oracle did not exist. Every update, every bug fix, every feature shipped without asking anyone for permission.
By 2011, Oracle gave up and handed OpenOffice to the Apache Foundation like a kid returning a toy they broke.
LibreOffice kept shipping. Today, it runs on millions of computers, and entire governments across Germany, Italy, and France have officially ditched Microsoft Office for it.
OpenOffice still exists under Apache. It just hasn't had a major release in years.
Microsoft charges you $99 a year for Office.
Google charges you $12 a month for Workspace.
LibreOffice charges you nothing.
The most interesting part of this story is that Oracle technically owned the code.
What they couldn't own was the community.

A damning diagnosis of ReactOS after 30 years of development.

ReactOS, the open source project to create a Windows 2000 (well, 2003 Server) compatible system, is now 30 years old.
I downloaded the latest release and took it for a spin to see what 30 years of development has accomplished.
It’s worth noting: I am *exactly* the target demographic for ReactOS.
I’m an Open Source / Free Software advocate with a deep appreciation for the Windows 2000 era of Windows. (Heck, I worked on Windows 2000 at Microsoft.)
I find the idea of ReactOS to be exciting. So much so that I find myself willing to overlook significant issues in order to use this system.
A few quick thoughts on ReactOS 0.4.15 (the latest release) after trying to use it for the last 2 days:
- It doesn’t really work on actual hardware. At all. I tried. Couldn’t get it to boot on… anything. Old or new. Anyone with dreams of a modern, Windows 2000-ish (but Open Source) laptop… give up that dream. Hardware support is significantly worse than Linux in the mid-1990s.
- Virtual machines being the only option, I tried it under both QEMU and VirtualBox. VirtualBox worked a bit better, but both were not as speedy as I would expect. (Far, far slower than actual Windows 2000 running with the same VM settings on the same hardware.)
- Crashes. So many crashes. Copy a file? Crash. Run a Setup.exe? Crash. Open a few pre-loaded applications? Crash.
- Software binary compatibility was not bad, but not perfect. Some software installed and ran as expected. Others quietly failed. Others… crashed. Because crashing is what ReactOS does.
- ReactOS looks kinda like Windows. Mostly. A lot of visual details are a little… off. It’s like an Uncanny Valley version of Windows 2000. It’s almost disorientating. Try as I might I couldn’t get ReactOS to look quite right. Ironically, Linux using a good Windows 9x/2k theme looks more like Windows 2000 than ReactOS.
If I could get it to stop crashing… and add support for running on actual hardware… ReactOS seems like it would be a usable system.
But, if I’m being honest, Linux + Wine + a good Windows theme makes for a better, more stable, faster, more compatible Windows clone… than ReactOS.

Quick Linux tip:
When you need to create several directories at once, you don’t have to do it one by one.
The mkdir command supports brace expansion, letting you create multiple nested directories in a single go.
$ mkdir -p ~/scripts/{site-01,site-02}/{backup,monitoring,network}
This instantly creates folders for two sites, each with its own backup, monitoring, and network directories.
A neat way to save time and keep your directory structure organized.
En Reino Unido el globalista Keir Starmer está a punto de hacer obligatorio el ID Digital, pese al gran número de protestas de la gente despierta. Nada de esto lo verán los borregos que se 'informan' por la TV abierta (basura).

Windows 10 users must know this:
👇
On 14 October, Microsoft will end support for Windows 10. This will leave behind 240 million computers that can't migrate to Windows 11, either as security risks or e-waste.
Your computer may be one of them.
