Pancreatic cancer is notoriously difficult to treat because its cells can constantly adapt, spread rapidly, and outsmart therapy. A new study published in Nature Genetics by researchers at NYU Langone Health and UC San Diego Health has uncovered how these tumors rewrite their own DNA to survive, while revealing a potential way to reverse their deadliest behavior.
By analyzing nearly half a million individual cells from 62 human tumors, scientists discovered that a pancreatic tumor is not a uniform mass. Instead, it is an evolving ecosystem containing up to 11 distinct sub-families of cancer cells living side by side. As these cell groups alter their genetic code over time, some develop resistance to chemotherapy while others gain the ability to spread to surrounding tissues.
The team pinpointed a specific gene called MYC as the main switch behind this dangerous evolution. When cancer cells acquire extra copies of the MYC gene, they shift from a slower-growing form into a highly aggressive state and simultaneously cloak themselves from the body's immune system.
Crucially, this transformation is not permanent. When researchers blocked the MYC gene in laboratory models, the aggressive cancer cells reverted to their slower, more manageable state and became visible to immune cells again. The team also found that these tumors rely on a protein called TIGIT to evade immune detection, explaining why standard immunotherapies often fail against pancreatic cancer and pointing toward promising new combination treatments.

This paper answers why confident idiots run the world.
Cornell University published a psychological paper that explains every terrible boss, every loud influencer, and every broken corporate hierarchy.
It’s called “Unskilled and Unaware of It.”
they tested participants across logic, grammar, and humor to measure the gap between actual performance and self-perception.
And the results are wild.
participants scoring in the bottom 12th percentile consistently believed they were operating in the 62nd percentile.
they were not lying. they were literally incapable of recognizing their own incompetence.
the paper revealed a brutal paradox:
the exact skills required to master a domain are the exact same skills required to accurately evaluate your own competence in that domain.
if you lack the skill, you inherently lack the cognitive capacity to realize you are failing.
this creates a dangerous systemic loop.
the incompetent are blessed with absolute, blinding certainty. their brain protects them from their own ignorance, allowing them to speak first, demand authority, and never second-guess their decisions.
meanwhile, the actual experts suffer the exact inverse.
top performers in the study consistently underestimated their rank. because a task was easy for them, they falsely assumed it was easy for everyone else.
they hesitate. they obsess over nuance. they assume they have nothing unique to add.
we are biologically wired to confuse confidence with competence.
the loudest person in the room gets promoted, gets funded, and gets the microphone, not because they know what they are doing, but because they are physically incapable of seeing what they don't.
the only defense mechanism is building systems that stop rewarding absolute certainty and start demanding proof of work.

One thing is missing here: men just abstain from homemaking in most societies. This makes women work double time for their entire lives. Where men are more responsible (e.g., Northern Europe), the things balance naturally.

Geoffrey Hinton once noticed that the tellers at his bank kept changing. When he asked one of them why, the teller didn't know, only that they got moved around a lot.
Hinton guessed the reason... if staff never work with the same people for long, it's much harder for a few of them to team up and cheat the bank.
That thought became one of the most useful tricks in deep learning. While a neural network trains, you randomly switch off about half its neurons at every step. No neuron can lean on a particular partner, so each one has to learn something useful on its own. The trick is called dropout, and it helped AlexNet win the 2012 ImageNet contest, which set off the modern AI boom. It's still built into many of today's networks.
