On October 8, the U.K. announced a major new initiative to accelerate progress on dementia, including a £48 million partnership to advance research and clinical trials and an £80 million program to improve earlier diagnosis. The investments will bring together government, researchers, industry and people with lived experience to accelerate innovation and help promising treatments reach patients sooner. Canada has an opportunity to build on this momentum. “Through stronger coordination and continued investment in its National Dementia Strategy, meaningful progress on diagnosis, treatment and care can be made,” says Christina Scicluna, CEO of the Alzheimer Society of Canada. “People living with dementia and their care partners deserve nothing less.” #Dementia #DementiaResearch #AlzheimersDisease

If we don't take action, disease-modifying therapies will be out of reach for many Ontarians. We must let the Ontario Government know that disease-modifying treatments should be publicly funded. Add your voice: bit.ly/4gQcZAS

🌟 Small Steps, Big Difference is back. Today, the NIA is proud to launch the second year of Small Steps, Big Difference — our national public education campaign helping Canadians recognize concerning changes in memory, thinking, behaviour or mood and feel more confident starting a conversation. An estimated 772,000 Canadians are currently living with dementia — and nearly two-thirds of people living with dementia may be undiagnosed. Recognizing changes and starting a conversation can be an important first step toward getting answers, accessing care and support earlier, and planning for the future. This year’s campaign features new videos encouraging Canadians to “have the conversation,” along with practical resources to help people recognize potential changes and talk about memory concerns. We are incredibly grateful to the Slaight Family Foundation, whose generous support makes this work possible, and to our campaign partners Cleansheet, The DAVE Group and Intent for helping bring the campaign to life. Because when it comes to memory concerns, a small step can make a big difference. Start the conversation today: SmallStepsBigDifference.ca #SmallStepsBigDifference #DementiaAwareness #BrainHealth

The Alzheimer Society of Canada, alongside members of the Canadian Federation of Alzheimer Societies, welcomes the positive draft recommendation from Canada’s Drug Agency which recommends that donanemab be reimbursed through provincial and territorial drug plans. This marks an important step toward expanding treatment options for people living with mild cognitive impairment and early-stage Alzheimer’s disease.
