Pak Army has a decades-long pattern of systematically underreporting its own dead and wounded to protect its image of invincibility. Classic case: Kargil 1999. During and for 11 years after the war, the Army insisted regular troops were not involved — only “mujahideen.” Official casualty figures were kept deliberately low. Bodies of fallen soldiers were often left unclaimed on the Indian side. India performed the last rites with full military honours according to Islamic tradition because Pakistan refused to acknowledge or retrieve them. Only in November 2010 did the Army quietly upload 453 names of its own soldiers and officers killed in Kargil to the “Shuhada’s Corner” on its website — tucked away, no fanfare, no national mourning at the time. Same playbook in the 2000s–2010s FATA and Swat operations against TTP. Heavy fighting, multiple outposts overrun, ambushes, and high actual losses. Official per-incident numbers stayed suspiciously low. Independent databases (SATP and others) consistently recorded far higher security forces fatalities. Media access was restricted, information blacked out, and totals massaged. Why? To save face. Admitting the real butcher’s bill would expose failed strategies, the blowback from years of proxy policies, recruitment shortfalls, and the true cost of operations in KP and Balochistan. It would fuel questions about leadership, morale, and why the “invincible” Army keeps bleeding in the same areas decade after decade. Martyrs are not always publicly honoured with the full dignity and transparency their sacrifice deserves. Families often receive minimal or delayed information. Burials stay low-profile. The narrative stays tightly controlled so the institution never looks weak. Adil Raja’s breakdown — with side-by-side official vs independent numbers — is just the latest chapter in this long book of opacity. Pak Army’s priority has repeatedly been institutional reputation over honest accounting to the nation whose sons it sends into battle.
