Fighterfighter Michael Cammarata lost his life in the September 11th attacks.
In 1991, he played right field for the Staten Island team that made it to Williamsport.
His #11 is the only number retired by the Little League World Series

911 was spent watching the second tower fall from 8th Ave in Chelsea while a dust cloud headed North. People running uptown covered in dust. Being in the first group allowed back in Penn Station on the LiRR after squads clearing it from potential bombs while NYers quietly and cautiously made space for each other to fit as many in as possible into those train cars. Squished like sardines but with grace and care for each other, we all made it out of NYC while dust-covered people spoke about seeing people jump from the tower. Everyone silent, listening. Everyone in shock. Nobody knew what else might happen or if going back home was safe either.
The lives lost, including first responders were family and friends of those I knew. Everyone around me was suffering loss. The city was quickly a sea of posted images and flowers and memorials everywhere you looked with NYers not wanting to be scared out of their homes and lives, supporting each other. Out of state students and tourists left. NYers stayed as if in a united protest, to not allow anything to run us out of our homes.
I'll never forget that day or the days that followed. The bravery of my fellow NYers has stayed with me and greatly impacted my life.

In the aftermath of 9/11, Steve Buscemi returned to his old fire station, where he had served as a firefighter in the early 1980s.
Donning his old uniform, he worked 12 hour shifts for days on end, searching for survivors in the rubble of the World Trade Center.
He did so without media attention, a quiet act of courage that later became a powerful symbol of solidarity.
