An editor just emailed me asking if if I'd made a mistake in an article when I wrote that someone's salary was $0.17 a month in Venezuela. I told her I hadn't. I explained it was 130 bolivares - so it fluctuates in dollars, but right now that is what is was equivalent to.
Then I explained about the meagre wages and how they were supplemented by 'bonos' - additional payments, that aren't part of the formal wage or pensions system, but people are eligible for - and also gave her some examples of prices in Venezuela. Buses cost more than that. So does a loaf of bread.
It's kind of crazy trying to explain Venezuela sometimes...🫠
