After years in cramped cages, two brown bears are adjusting to their new life following a remarkable rescue mission that spanned multiple countries, was disrupted by two major conflicts and involved more than 100 people. 💚 For Bu and Tyapa, the five-year rescue journey from the Republic of Dagestan in Russia to the Irish countryside was anything but straightforward. One bear had spent their life forced to perform in a circus, while the other was confined to a cage so small they could not stand upright. Today, the bears are now adjusting to a totally different world among the trees and grass at Wild Ireland, a sanctuary for rescued animals in County Donegal. Read more: bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx62…

Stop calling them "natural disasters." Floods after deforestation. Heatwaves after deforestation. Famines after corporate land grabs. It's not nature being cruel. It's human greed being careless. There is no climate catastrophe without a human choice behind it. 🌍 #ClimateJustice

Seabirds and sewage among UNESCO status challenges Sewage being discharged into the sea and under-threat seabirds are among the challenges facing the Isle of Man after a decade as a UNESCO Biosphere, a report has said. The State of the Biosphere report looks back on the 10 years since the island became the world's first whole-nation Biosphere in 2016, in recognition of its thriving natural habitats from returning wildlife to new marine reserves. But it warns that while some wildlife is recovering, many species and habitats are still in long-term decline. It comes ahead of a UNESCO decision next summer on whether the island will keep its status bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwzr…

#RNLI #Volunteers are HEROES!🚨
Nigel Farage’s attack on the RNLI and co is a new low even for this bottom-feeder. He wants to prosecute anyone who saves lives of people that he doesn't like. Desperate Farage diverts attention from investigations by pledging laws that can't work. archive.ph/5UYnG

Decline in European Bees and Hoverflies Raises Alarm 👇 For more than a century, researchers and conservationists have called for urgent action to prevent the worrying decline among European bees and hoverflies. At the Doñana Biological Station in Spain, researchers led by Carlos Martinez-Nunez studied more than four million records to ascertain the reasons for the decline.  Most of the species could still be found somewhere in Europe, but many had disappeared from... gowildwithannette.com/declin…

This is really interesting, and offers hope, if I say so myself.👇🙂 Coral Reefs: The Healing Power of Touch 💚 We have long known that a simple touch from a loved one can make a dramatic difference, calming us and helping us to feel better. But who knew that a simple touch from one coral to another could actually heal? In what can only be called an astonishing discovery during a laboratory experiment, scientists realised that even the most severely bleached corals, close to dying, could recover fully if placed by, and in touch with, healthy, genetically identical coral. With warming oceans and coral reefs under stress, this discovery comes at a critical time. Marine heat waves, due to climate change, are putting vital ecosystems at risk. Projections suggest coral reefs could disappear from many areas within a few decades... gowildwithannette.com/coral-…

A first-of-its-kind clinical trial could cut years from the search for treatments that work for people with Alzheimer’s disease. The national trial, called AD-SMART, will test multiple drugs simultaneously, starting with two repurposed medicines already used to treat type 2 diabetes and ADHD. Testing drugs that are already approved to treat other conditions and known to be safe means that, if successful, treatments can reach people living with Alzheimer’s much faster than a medicine developed from scratch. Trials like this, which test multiple drugs simultaneously, have been successfully used across other diseases such as cancer. Now we hope to see dementia research follow in their footsteps to speed up advances. We know that people affected by dementia are eager to see effective drug options, so it's fantastic to see an innovative trial like AD-SMART recruiting patients. The national trial is led by the UK Dementia Research Institute and Alzheimer’s Research UK, in partnership with the National Institute for Health and Care Research, the Medical Research Council and Health Data Research UK, with ongoing funding committed by UK government to support the trial.

Thank you to @niamh_salkeld for sharing her family's experience and raising MND and housing adaptations in the Senedd. The First Minister said the code of practice already lets councils act rapidly. But people with MND are still facing delays. The Welsh Government should: 1️⃣ Implement a Fast-track for people with MND 2️⃣ Remove the means test
