Good story by @JeanneKuang about Gavin Newsom's taxpayer-funded comms shop that never stops posting: “The 2028 POTUS race starts Jan. 1, 2027,” Dem pollster Celina Lake said. “He’s set up the infrastructure to keep it going.” calmatters.org/politics/2026…
Great step back from @ConorDougherty on Prop. 45 and how the question of sprawl in California is at the center of the measure

Gov. @GavinNewsom releases how he plans to vote on almost all of California’s ballot measures.
Note he did *not* take a stance on @CalChamber’s Prop 45 regarding environmental reviews/CEQA. He also did not indicate where he stands on Prop 41 regarding tax audits.
Newsom’s stances:
PROP 1 — YES
PROP 2 — YES
PROP 3 — YES
PROP 4 — YES
PROP 5 — YES
PROP 37 — YES
PROP 38 — YES
PROP 39 - NO
PROP 40 - NO
PROP 42 — YES
PROP 43 — NO
PROP 44 — NO
The Governor is expected to hit the campaign trail in the coming days, but it remains unclear who, specifically, he will campaign for. He previously announced he plans to campaign for Democratic House candidates running in close, newly-drawn Prop 50 congressional districts in California.
Seems there's a decent chance an AI-driven extinction event comes before many counties make court records available online.

ICYMI: The influencers behind the complaints against Tom Steyer and Nithya Raman have also lodged one against Steve Hilton.
The focus is on right-wing media figures who were paid by the Hilton campaign.

main takeaway here is Newsom can fly cast, Tapper cannot
why they are shoulder-to-shoulder like they are fishing an AK salmon run, i have no clue
Wow. former Windsor mayor Dominic Foppoli, who stayed defiant after being accused by more than a dozen women of sexual harassment, rape and assault, hit with a $13 million verdict by a civil jury in Sonoma County.
pressdemocrat.com/2026/09/11…
From The Chronicle, whose reporting first brought allegations against Foppoli to light
"Foppoli initially sat tall in his chair but slumped as the judge read verdict after verdict, tallying the sums awarded against him."

The file photo on this NYT story is actually of The Bee's former, and famed, headquarters. McClatchy sold that building in 2017 and it was torn down by a development company that builds nice condos. My colleague @annie3mer has a great story on that:

I wrote about the massacre at McClatchy, a rough day that saw newsrooms gutted from Charlotte to Miami to Sacramento. Through it all, McClatchy is still implausibly claiming it remains "deeply committed to local journalism." status.news/p/mcclatchy-layo…

Yesterday, McClatchy laid off more than 90 unionized media workers across 17 publications.
The departure of these talented reporters, visual journalists & writers will immediately leave gaping holes in local coverage for dozens of communities across the US.
McClatchy, whose titles include The Miami Herald and The Sacramento Bee, executed its most severe layoffs in years on Thursday, cutting newsroom staff at some papers by upwards of 40%.

This will be a long thread. Please stick with it.
The Miami Herald, one of the premier legacy newspapers in America, laid off or wrote off more than 30 positions today – well over one-third of its editorial staff. The cuts include crucial accountability beats. (1)

Some sad personal news: the Sacramento Bee’s three-reporter sports department has been eliminated during McClatchy’s sweeping layoffs, which means my eight-year run is coming to an end. I’m incredibly thankful for time spent with my wonderful colleagues and editors…

Very sobering article suggesting that climate change and associated wild fires are causing the collapse of many Western forests; one study suggests that by 2100, 40% of Western conifer forests will be replaced by shrubland (and poison oak). nytimes.com/2026/08/23/clima…

Proud to be friends w/ @lara_korte, an amazing reporter who has been aggressively reporting on the DOD's botched Bahrain evacuation stripes.com/branches/navy/20…
Scoop w/ @liamjscott: The Pentagon fired Stars and Stripes's publisher, editor-in-chief, and a reporter today following criticism of DOD interference. The EIC and reporter were fired for "insubordination" for doing a CBS interview. washingtonpost.com/business/…
