I haven't seen The Devils but Ebert seemed to be pretty aware of how many "transgressive" movies in the 60's and 70's were only "transgressive" in that they were basically just hyper-misogyny presented as art, and he'd just say that in the reviews. That's the pattern in his negative reviews of "great" movies.
Roger Ebert is basically incapable of comprehending anything more complicated than a Hollywood blockbuster, so that does check out, yes.

These are some powerful parrots we're working with
Effective Immediately, all organizations using PHP for their systems are advised to be prepared for an update addressing two critical vulnerabilities. PHP is widely used for web applications. These vulnerabilities often provide a direct path to the server's file system or database. If an immediate update is not feasible, it is recommend that organizations take the system offline until it can be fully mitigated. NSA will follow up shortly with more specific guidance.

I'm so tired of people talking as if there's a clear final answer to what AI's about when we're about 4 years into the current era with it. The answer isn't going to vibe its way into view.
Perhaps the threat was never a rogue AI agent trying to subvert humans—but humans using AI to hurt other humans.

Suddenly a lot of artists making art about how actually art isn’t going to save us, and like respectfully I think only you guys thought otherwise

The Vice President directly and explicitly taking the side of the enabler of the sexual abuse of children over the children themselves has been, I have to admit, a bit of a surprise to me.
Vance: The media and the Democrats in the state of Ohio are obsessed because Vivek Ramaswamy had the audacity to run a TV commercial which calls it out like it is and calls Amy Acton a liar.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The ad features Amy Acton's estranged mother disputing Acton's account of childhood homelessness, rape and abuse. Both 1978 Mahoning County court records and Acton's brother, Phillip Stearns, corroborate her account of living in a tent and abuse. wyso.org/2026-10-20/amy…

So good
After this post from Alex I read this book, and I found it riveting. It's really only partially a book about AI, and very much a book about evolution, consciousness, neuroscience and linguistics. There were a number of profound and useful insights. Highly recommended.

This seems like a new low
Vance’s response to the ad featuring Amy Acton’s estranged mother: “Politics is a tough business, and my message to my fellow elected Republicans is: if you actually believe in the things you say you believe in, stop whining about an advertisement and go win the race in 13 days."

The videos AI can make when I give it my stuff are already better than my channel. 3Blue1Brown is 10 OOMs of quality above mine. AI video seems to improve by about 3 OOMs of quality per year, so...
Grant Sanderson (@3blue1brown) predicts that in 3 years, there will be an end-to-end AI generated channel better than his! 🤯 He admits to feeling resigned about it: "There's a part of me thinks, 'hey, even if it only lasts a couple glorious years, like, to fully embrace that.'"

Very confused by Tyler's take here. I think the movie really undersold just how clear the case against her was, maybe to lull us in more.
