If anyone is curious, the previous President and CEO of Saint Anthony Hospital, a safety-net hospital serving mostly uninsured or Medicaid patients, made $771,365 in '22-'23 and $499,295 in other forms of compensation. Dorval Carter is probably in line for something similar.
He is leaving public transportation period to lead Saint Anthony Hospital on Chicago’s West Side.

I don't live in the Midwest or the South. I'm in this forgotten hole, the Mid-South. It doesn't get much coverage because it's so far from each state's major population and political centers. It's culturally unique from the South and Midwest. How do we bring more journalism here?

Read this absolutely damning account of how insurers, including United, rely on the same doctors to deny mental health care, even as judges repeatedly question their calls: “puzzling”, disingenuous”, “dishonest”, “baseless”, and more propublica.org/article/menta…

A month ago, we got a tip from a reader who'd had a delightful run-in w/ a 94-year-old man working at Midway Airport. "He'd make a fascinating subject for a ... story." @mack_liederman tracked him down. Meet Robert Garrison, the holiday hero we need: blockclubchicago.org/2024/12…

After reviewing leaked documents, we have found UnitedHealth is strategically limiting access to a treatment for thousands of children with autism across the country in order to cut costs. Advocates say the company’s strategy may be illegal. propublica.org/article/unite… 👇

Some twenty million Americans are actively preparing for cataclysm—roughly twice as many as in 2017. Political violence, including the spectre of civil war, is one of the reasons. newyorker.com/magazine/2024/…
