At pre-op apt with son’s surgeon, 11yo went through every line of consent form asking detailed questions before signing.
Surgeon explained everything, adjusting level of info as he saw 11’s interest & maturity. (It’s not his first rodeo.)
People-centred prep for surgery!

I had the honour of supporting resident and family engagement in the development of this standard. It was a pleasure working with such a dynamic group of individuals who care passionately about the care delivered in #LongTermCare across Canada. #LTCStandard @HSO_world

Sometimes all you can do is try to keep your head above water. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't.

Imagine having to look your kid in the eye years from now, and tell them that the reason they have long term disability is because you thought you knew more about viruses and health, than the experts in that field.

Could we rein in the patriarchal narrative a tad Stephen & Doug.Your “disappointment” and “don’t force my hand” sounds like you’re disciplining a child. We are not in a subservient relationship with you.

A note from a psychiatrist: bipolar disorder doesn't cause you to be racist. Depression doesn't cause you to be racist. Dementia doesn't cause you to be racist. Racism is never a criteria used for mental illness diagnoses. Stop blaming someone's racism on their mental illness.

And doctors, please remember to see/hear/speak to the caregiver, as well. The cancer patient faces the possibility of pain, disability, death. The caregiver faces the possibility of going through life with only half their heart. They both need you. ❤️
