Great point. We have shifted to small group viva sessions led by faculty members to judge quality apart from the written text for all our public policy courses @TakshashilaInst

Why should UPI transactions remain free forever? "Because it has positive externalities". But in public finance, this argument is flawed. Having externalities does NOT imply a lifetime zero-price tag for every user. A #thread

Anwesha Sen (@Anwxsha) writes for @ndtv on the arrival of the I-2SEA subsea cable system to India.
While the new cable highlights strong global investment interest, it is not a fix for critical vulnerabilities in India's subsea cable infrastructure. To secure these vital data lifelines, New Delhi must build domestic cable-repair capacity, classify landing stations as critical national infrastructure, diversify cable landing stations, and encourage Indian companies to start building cable-laying and repair equipment.

Data privacy in India is a joke. Every third person knows exactly when my car insurance is due for renewal and has my phone number. Each year, I get 100s of messages and calls from different companies selling car insurance. (Yes, DND, etc is done!).
Anyone else face this?

What if I told you that you have a public finance playground to yourself using which you can:
- Upload a state budget document and it will analyse it across 9 public finance dimensions, automatically cross-referencing it against that state's own CAG audit report?
- Enter what you paid in personal income tax for FY2025-26 and see how the Union government's own spending plan for that same year allocated your share?
- Compare fiscal health across Indian states, over time?
And more coming... @PSarthak19 has created one such playground and made it open-access. This portal is a companion to our book Fiscal Fables. We felt that in the AI age, a book should make knowledge not just accessible but also allow citizens to experiment and analyse real-world data. So here it is.

Subsea cables are the fibre-optic networks laid across the ocean floor that carry approximately 95% of all intercontinental digital communications, serving as the essential, yet often invisible, backbone of the modern global internet. In India, the subsea cable ecosystem is constrained by regulatory gaps, procurement hurdles, and structural commercial barriers, resulting in significant vulnerabilities in the nation’s digital connectivity.
In this episode of All Things Policy, Anisree Suresh (@AnisreeSuresh) and Anwesha Sen (@Anwxsha) explore these vulnerabilities and discuss ways to mitigate the same.

Have a public policy question? I built a RAG search tool based on 350+ editions of our Anticipating the Unintended newsletter.
Type any policy question and get the relevant frameworks, and what we've written about it, pulled straight from six years of the archive.
Psst.

Because who needs evidence for actual policy making, when uncles can just force their worldview on everyone through coercion.
(p.s. encouraging children to read is good. Thinking age-gating chunks of the internet is the answer/will work is just silly and naive)

Begging crime beat reporters not to uncritically carry the police version on FRS. Ask them even basic questions, who are the service providers? Who authorised it? Where does the data go? What are false positive rates? How much does each attempt cost?
Investigate the tenders? Find out how they were awarded?
