Colorado Road Trip Dividing Line: Geekicus Maximus!
Did the program from Colorado Springs this evening. Started off talking about my new Greek facsimiles, and then had to discuss the NXR insanity, Samuel Sey, etc. Had to use the terms "vile" and "nauseating" a bit too often. Then we geeked out on Greek manuscripts, 2 Peter 1:1, ECM, CBGM, Accordance, and all sorts of other fun Greek and New Testament things. Those who love the deep dive will have a lot of fun with this one!
Oh, and here is the link to my Pseudo-Dionysius article, finally!

My sincere apologies for not posting this yesterday. I really meant to! Here is the entire Pro Pastor Journal (some great articles in here) that also contains my article in response to the Nikitopoulos/Truglia theory on Pseudo-Dionysius actually being a genuine first century document.

Debate Review: Galatians 3:1, Basil's Real Argument
An hour and forty five minute program today taken up with two major issues: first, reviewing how debates are supposed to be judged, and using that as a framework to focus upon the key issues in the debate from Saturday. This led to a review of Truglia's claims about Galatians 3:1, and we finished up with a lengthy, in-depth review of Basil's argument that immediately brings us to his words in 18.45, abused by the 2nd Nicene Council.

Tomorrow on the Dividing Line, 5pm EDT: in-depth discussion of what debate is supposed to be about, rules, means of evaluation, and responses to the Orthobros online. Then, close examination of Craig Truglia's attempt to use such texts and Galatians 3:1 to establish apostolicity, his claims about Pseudo-Dionysius being "established," his use of scholarly sources, and then a response to @StephenBoyce333 on Basil's words in De Spiritu Sancto 18.45 and the reality that EO's (and RC's by extension) must sacrifice authorial context and original intent to create "principles" upon which they then create dogma. Here is a screen from that presentation:

Just a quick comment between a pre-sunrise 5km run and a Zwift race on bike: So @PastorNinja told me he ran into Alex Sorin's "watch party" while looking for the video (he was flying while it happened) and caught him accusing me of, of all things, sexism for daring to mention Empress Irene's central and pivotal role in Nicea II. I just saw a screenshot of him making a similar accusation. And I just have to chuckle at this guy, and the Orthobro group as a whole. Nobody, and I mean nobody, who was actually at the debate and listening meaningfully would ever come up with something as vacuous as that. You cannot talk about Nicea II without dealing with the background and with the first woman Empress of the Byzantine Empire. Nicea II would never have taken place without her intentionally bringing it about. I never said a word about her being a woman as if that invalidated the council or anything else. I said the council was political in nature, her elevation of Tarasios was political in nature, her enforcement of her will at the council was political in nature. These are facts, nothing more. Amazing that these folks are so utterly blinded by their dedication to their traditions that they cannot even HEAR what the other side is saying. Of course, Nicea II anathematized the other side BEFORE even defining its position, so I guess they are just following tradition! :-)
Excellent debate review with a great quote at the end from someone Truglia cited for his position. But this particular quote goes directly against the debate thesis!
Craig Truglia vs. James White
"Icon Veneration AS DEFINED by the Second Nicene Council is Apostolic."
After watching this debate and seeing the responses by Catholics and Orthodox, I believe that there was a major misperception of what the resolution of the debate really was.
I think many Catholics and Orthodox heard a long list of evidence of artwork and the religious depictions of Christ and the Saints, and thought that Truglia pulled off his job.
But that would be to miss the crux of the debate, which James White kept his finger on.
The crux of the debate was whether icon VENERATION being OBLIGATORY and NECESSARY for salvation was taught by the Apostles.
Both White and Truglia both agreed on this major point: Nicaea 787's definition of icon veneration is PRECISELY that it is NECESSARY for salvation. So even if the viewer thinks otherwise, both White and Truglia were on the very same page: icon veneration is an essential practice for the Christian in his walk with God in order to make it to heaven, and this divine mandate goes back to the Apostolic imperatives.
And so the job is not to show that artwork and depictions of Christ/Saints existed in early Christianity. The job is not to show that the veneration of artwork and depictions of Christ/Saints existed in early Christianity.
That doesn't get Truglia to the touchdown, by HIS OWN self-proclaimed burden. He stood up and repeatedly said that Nicaea 787 made icon veneration an obligatory means to salvation, just as necessary as PRAYER is for salvation. In other words, Truglia believes that Nicaea 787 teaches that from the very beginning of the New Covenant, icon veneration was a necessary means to obtain eternal life.
To make this practical, Truglia believes that on the day of Pentecost, the Apostles included the teaching that creative artists and painters are immediately required to make images for the purpose of saving the souls of the people baptized in Jerusalem by setting up the practice of icon veneration, because the latter is necessary for the Christian life and necessary to obtain heaven.
In case what I'm saying is not clear enough, let me give you a perfect analogy by which to understand the burden that Truglia willingly put on himself.
The "Holy Kiss."
Who can deny that early Christians practiced the Holy Kiss? We read of it Scripture (Rom. 16:16; 1 Cor. 16:20; 2 Cor. 13:2; 1 Thess 5:26; 1 Pet 5:14). We read of it in the early Christian fathers (Justin Martyr, Athenagorus, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Passion of Perpetua and Felicity, Hippolytus's Apostolic Tradition, Apostolic Constitutions, Athanasius's Festal letters, Cyril of Jerusalem, John Chrysostom, Augustine of Hippo, Jerome, Ambrose of Milan, Theodore of Mopsuestia, Pope Innocent I, etc. etc.).
Ok, so the Apostolic historicity of the Holy Kiss is quite clear, and I'm not aware of any historian or theologian who would dispute this.
And yet, do we have evidence that the holy kiss is necessary for salvation, such that if you don't do it you are lost?
The evidence of the existence of icons in the Apostolic age and in early Christianity (especially before Nicaea) is nowhere near the evidence for the Holy Kiss.
But EVEN IF we did have the same amount of evidence, or even more, of icons during the Apostolic age and early Christianity, it would still not get us to the resolution of this debate between White and Truglia.
Did Truglia get us to the place where he proved the Apostles taught that icon veneration was specifically necessary to do by divine mandate in order to get to heaven?
No.
Truglia took the positive position (the affirmative, proposer, claimant) and, as such, bore the burden of proof.
James White had zero burden of proof because he simply took the negative, i.e., arguing that the proposer didn't prove what he was proposing.
Having said that, I think Truglia was well-spoken, very respectful, entertaining, charismatic, and did an absolutely fantastic job proving that religious artwork existed in Church history, even before Nicaea 325. To be fair to Truglia, he did not demand that the way in which 9th century icon veneration looked would be perfectly the same in all places and at all times, but he attempted to show that there is a bare minimum-- an image and religious respect to the prototype through the image. All of that information was done well and he certainly did his homework for that particular task.
One particular Eastern Orthodox theologian (Byzantinist, even) that Truglia cited in support of the existence of icons prior to the 7th century was Fr. Andrew Louth. Interestingly enough, Louth says elsewhere that the NECESSITY of venerating icons would not have been found in the 4th century:

Allow me a quick correction. I do not deny the difference between person and nature. Truglia interrupted so often that he said things I could not possibly hear because I was still speaking. I have discussed, and utilized, the distinction of being and person, and person and nature, for decades. If he talked over a response at some point (as in the next topic), that is on him, not me. So keep your anathemas to yourself, sir.
Secondly, in a debate on icon veneration where the Council anathematized everyone who would not kiss the icon, the difference between grieving parents and the "veneration" of a wooden painting of someone who died centuries before could not be more obvious. And it is you, not me, who are so corrupted in your thinking by a political council of 1200+ years ago that you would not be able to hear that obvious reality.

The final words of the 7th Session of Nicea II, 787:
The holy council exclaimed: ‘We all believe accordingly, we all hold the same, we have all signed in accord. This is the faith of the apostles, this is the faith of the fathers, this is the faith of the orthodox, this is the faith that has sustained the world. Believing in one God, to be praised in trinity, we kiss the honourable images. May those who do not hold accordingly be anathema! May those who do not believe accordingly be driven far away from the church! We follow the ancient legislation of the catholic church, we observe the decrees of the fathers. We anathematize those who either add anything or remove anything from the church. We anathematize the intrusive innovation of the accusers of Christians. We accept the sacred
images. We subject those who do not believe accordingly to anathema. To those who apply to the sacred images the sayings in divine scripture against
idols anathema! To those who do not kiss the holy and venerable images anathema! To those who call the sacred images idols anathema! To those who say that Christians had recourse to the images as gods anathema! To those who knowingly communicate with those who insult and dishonour the sacred images anathema! To those who say it was someone other than Christ our God who rescued us from idols anathema! To those who dare to say that the catholic church ever accepted idols anathema!
‘Many years to the emperors! To Constantine and his mother Eirene many years! To the victorious emperors many years! To the new Constantine and the new Helena eternal memory! May God protect their authority! Heavenly king, protect the kings on earth!
‘To all the heretics anathema! To the assembly that insulted the sacred images anathema! To whoever accept the impious mouthings of their heresy anathema!....They scorned the images of the Lord and his saints, and the Lord has scorned them. If anyone defends anyone who belongs to this heresy that accuses Christians or who has ended his life in it, anathema!...If anyone does not accept the gospel narratives when painted, anathema! If anyone does not kiss them as being in the name of the Lord and his saints, anathema! If anyone rejects any ecclesiastical tradition written or unwritten, anathema!
I had to provide these words today. My opponent, who believes them, did not. Today's debate was about the gospel, and Craig admitted it. Everyone in that audience, and any audience in the future who watches it, must have the maturity to recognize what is at stake. Nicea II added icon veneration (προσκύνησις) to the gospel. The Apostles never taught such a thing, and all the references to symbols, chalices, signet rings, and grave markings, from earlier centuries, does not add it to the gospel either. So when you boil it all down, Mr. Truglia defended the anathematization of entire swaths of professing Christians not over the doctrine of God, or a denial of the resurrection, or a perversion of the gospel, but, because we do not do what Irene, Empress of the Byzantine Empire, demanded we do 1200+ years ago.

Appreciate everyone who came out today to an early morning debate. Was really surprised that folks flew in from far away! Amazing. Lots of great conversations afterward as well.
So the Orthobros are very actively demonstrating that their mutual maturity age is about 9 right now on line, dancing around and claiming victory---just as expected. I mean, these guys think Jay Dyer wins every moment he opens his mouth to order a pizza, so what do you expect? It never crossed my mind to even worry about them. I noticed as I looked briefly at a string of their "bloodbath" comments that the average followers number was less than 100. Serious folks! But I am keeping my eyes on two topics from the debate that, if there is a serious bone in any of their bodies, will eventually come up---HAS to come up, because Craig fumbled those topics badly. So far...not a whisper. So, I am hoping some more good comments will be posted so that when I take the time to go over the non-engagement with key elements of my presentation we will have a few illustrations to add.
Oh, I do have to note this one just in passing. Saw someone, seriously, suggesting that the reason Peter knew who Moses and Elijah were on the Mount of Transfiguration was because...the Jews had icons of them! Think that one through for a second. I really think the person was being serious. Honestly!
But I would like to respond to one clip going around that is very illustrative of the mindset of the Orthobros. During cross-ex Craig repeatedly interrupted me, mid-sentence. At one point I was explaining the difference between the concept of veneration (προσκύνησις) as defined at Nicea II and the use of a picture of a lost child at a funeral. Craig interrupted me mid sentence and this time I did not stop speaking. I was talking about how the parents knew the child, but the veneration of icons did not have that element of personal knowledge in it. As old as I am, I never met Basil or Gregory or Chrysostom (the men in the icon I held up at the end of the debate). So I do not have personal knowledge of them. While I was still talking Craig asked about personal knowledge of Christ. I did not hear him because I was still talking. And now the entire net (including Jay Dyer) are saying I have denied knowing Christ personally. The absurdity of it is stunning, but, these are the Orthobros we are talking about here. Absurdity is the oxygen of their six hour long mutual admiration society webcasts. But what is really funny to think about is this: given their own standards, does this mean that every Orthobro who has venerated an icon of Christ is qualified to be an apostle? I mean, since they have "seen the Lord" and hence "know" him in some special way, that means they can be an apostle, right? Uh huh. Got it.
