Mistakes I made this Back to School season that I will learn from going forward: -I did not take into account when each state/region goes back to school. For example, Georgia goes back earlier than most places in the country. By August 7th, my regional FBM orders slowed down tremendously because my state goes back before that (in most counties), as well as some other surrounding states. Mid/Late July I was crushing everyone I talked to in buy box share due to increased in state FBM orders and local demand. I was priced up on stuff waiting for the “peak” when in reality I was blowing an opportunity to move lots of inventory. Moral of the story, peak can demand can be different for each region of the country for regional FBM demand. -Never run out of supplies. Creates so much unneeded stress. They will get used eventually. -Certain items had extremely high offer counts very early in the season, I thought demand would be able to chew through those. It did not. -It is extremely important to cut loss when the peak demand is still occurring, because the price is going to drop quickly following panic on the back end. -Amazon has gotten stricter on determining buy box price. Just because an item had a buy box last year at a certain price, does not mean it will this year. -FBM’ing backpacks was the play. Allows for listing on multiple listings (if possible) and expedited orders a great boost for margin. -Find low key listings. Best performing margin asins had a very high sales rank year round, but there was plenty of volume during peak season and great margin. It was a great month. A record month for the store as it should be. Lots of lessons learned and we will get better for next year!
